SLP Orioles-Richfield Spartans Football Preview

Heading to the halfway point of the 2017 high school football season is the St. Louis Park Orioles as they travel to Richfield Friday night to take on the Spartans.

Last week wasn't a happy homecoming for the Orioles as they were shut out by the fifth ranked team in Class AAAA the Holy Angels Stars 30-0.  St. Louis Park couldn't move the chains in the second half as the Stars defense kept them from reaching the end zone.  They will need a solid game from quarterback Johnny Sorenson, who didn't get a lot of opportunities to use his mobility as Holy Angels kept pressuring him and forcing turnovers, including an interception by Mitch Hendrickson that he ran for a touchdown.

As for the host Spartans, it has been a struggle for the maroon and white so far this season as they enter the game with a record of 0-3.  Last Friday, Richfield came up shot against the Orono Spartans (who will play in St. Louis Park's final home game October 6) 46-30.  The Spartan defense has been prone to giving up points by the bushel as they have averaged 46 points against them this season.  As for the Richfield offense, they need to get some momentum going if they are going to pick up their first win of 2017.

Can Sorenson get the Orioles out of their offensive funk and pick up their second win against the Spartans?  The line has to create opportunities for receives such as Semaj Mitchell and Akili Farris and running back Aaron Sledge.  The defense has to cut down on turnovers.  Please not that this week's game has a different starting time of 7:30.  If you come at the usual time of 7 PM., you'll be early but you will still find a good seat for the Orioles and the Spartans.
