Learning for Leadership Mustangs Gallop Past Groves Academy Griffins

The Learning for Leadership Mustangs got plenty of leadership from Kafi Abdi as he scored a season high 37 points to lead them to a 99-64 win over the Groves Academy Griffins Tuesday night in St. Louis Park.

It was Kofi Abdi who set the game's tempo early after he got a pass in the left post from Mahat Ibrahim and scored :03 into the game.  Patrick Quinn would tie the game for the Griffins and Learning for Leadership would forge ahead on a 5-0 that included a three pointer from Mohamed Khalif.  There would be dueling three pointer from both teams.  Max Greseth would hit from Highway 100 for Groves Academy followed by Learning for Leadership's Ibrahim.  Then it was the Griffins turn for a three as Malik Bodden would convert.
The Griffins would cut the lead to one on baskets by Max Bilcik and Larry Mohamed.  Would they head into the lead?  The answer would be no as Abdifatah Dakane would help spark a 7-0 run that would give the Mustangs an insurmountable lead.  The one bright spot for Groves Academy would be Bodden as he hit a couple of three point plays and scored 19 first half points.  But it wouldn't be enough to come close to Learning for Leadership as they led at halftime 48-34.

Ibrahim would open the second half scoring for the Mustangs with five consecutive points. Kafi Abdi would add four more to widen the lead.  Bodden would continue his first half dominance for the Griffins with four straight points.  But it was Kafi Abdi, the 6'4" junior who would showcase his athleticism and inside game as he received outstanding inside passes from his teammates that would result in points for the Mustangs.  They would send the game into running time and Groves Academy couldn't catch up as head coach Peter Shutte gave the reserve players a chance to play with the game pretty much decided.

Other players in double figures for Learning for Leadership were Badruden Aden with 19 points.  Khalif added 14, Ibrahim 13 and Dakane scored 11.  Bodden led Groves Academy with 33 points.  The only other Griffin in double figures was Larry Mohamed with 11 points.

The Mustangs improved their record to 8-5 and return to action on Friday, February 3 as they host the Christian Life Academy Hawks at 7 PM.  The Griffins fell to 1-15 and will also be in action on the 3rd, hosting the Heritage Academy Hawks at 7 PM.

SLP Orioles Wallop Waconia Wildcats

Friday night was a big night for Johnny Sorenson, who got a hat trick and was part of a five goal second period that led the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 9-1 win over the Waconia Wildcats at The Rec Center.

The Orioles got their first goal on the power play when Bauer Neudecker's shot was saved by the Wildcat goalie Trevor Rowe and Sorenson's shot from the left corner boards entered the net.  Waconia would tie the game on Jack Kittelson's rebound goal from the center slot.  It would be the only time the Wildcats would cross the goal line that night as St. Louis Park would forge ahead on Austin Stafne's right side goal with 2:24 left in the period.

The second period would start like the first as the Orioles would strike again with a power play goal.  Brenton Ryan rebounded Willy Basill's shot to put them ahead by two.  The Orioles would add four more goals to their ledger.  Luke Mobley rebounded his own shot and put the puck past Rowe.  Ryan would rise again after he got a pass from Blake Neudecker, cut inside the center slot and scored his second goal.  Sorenson would score his second goal after Stafne's shot from the right corner boards was saved by Rowe and the junior positioned himself on the right of Rowe and sent it into the net.  Even the St. Louis Park reserves got into the scoring mix.  Conor Schubring passed to Benji Wyberg on the right point and he lined it into the net for his first goal of the season.

Running time would take place in the third period with the Orioles ahead 7-1.  But the scoring didn't end just yet.  The Brothers Neudecker would combine for goal number eight as Blake made a right side pass to Bauer on the right side and Bauer drove it inside the cage.  The scoring would end four minutes later when Sorenson scored the hat trick on a center slot goal.

Both teams changed goalies in the third period.  Gavin Grams replaced Rowe for Waconia and William Phinney relieved Atticus Raasch for St. Louis Park.

The Orioles improved their record to 15-4 and begin a three game road trip Saturday, January 28 at 1 PM against the St. Paul Academy Spartans at Drake Arena.  The Wildcats lost their sixth straight game and fell to 3-15.  They return to action on Tuesday, January 31 against the New Prague Trojans at the Waconia City Ice Arena at 7 PM.  The Wildcats last win was against the Trojans on January 6 in New Prague when they recorded a 4-0 shut out.

SLP Orioles Win Battle of Birds

The West Rink at The Rec Center became a bird sanctuary Tuesday night as Bauer Neudecker scored two goals to lead the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 4-2 win over the Armstrong/Cooper Wings.

The Wings, comprised of students from both Robbinsdale district high schools took the early lead on a power play goal from Jack Goergen who rebounded Drew Eid's shot.  The Orioles would tie the game 1:40 later, also by way of the power play that saw Luke Mobley slide a cross ice pass to Riley Dvorak near the right boards and he would fire it toward the net.  Armstrong/Cooper would regain the lead on Goergen's right slot goal  with :43 left and the Wings would flock into the locker room with a 2-1 lead.

Armstrong/Cooper's lead would be short-lived in the second period when Bauer Neudecker got a pass from Grant Plender and he would score from the right slot.  St. Louis Park would almost take the lead on Riley Dvorak's goal from the right point but it was disallowed due to an offside call.  The good news for Orioles fans came while the Wings Eddie Kirchoff was serving a slashing penalty and Bauer Neudecker fed Johnny Sorenson at the right point and he would score a power play goal to put St. Louis Park ahead 3-2.

Bauer Neudecker would increase the lead :41 into the third period after he got a pass from Mobley and he went down the left boards like a car heading down Excelsior Blvd., cut to the center slot, changed direction and sent the puck into the net.  Armstrong/Cooper had a couple of golden opportunities to get back in the game.  They had a 4 on 3 advantage that would become a 5 on 3 but they weren't able to put the puck past St. Louis Park goalie Atticus Raasch.

The Orioles were without head coach Colin Hohman who was away on a business trip and Riley Klaers left the game with a broken wrist.

St. Louis Park improved their record to 14-4 and wrap up their three game home stand on Friday, January 27 against the Waconia Wildcats at the Rec Center at 7 PM.  Armstrong/Cooper fell to 7-7-2 and hosts the Irondale Knights on Thursday, January 26 at 7 PM at the New Hope Arena.

SLP Orioles Beat Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars

Like the title of a classic country song by Gene Autry, the St. Louis Park Orioles were "Back in the Saddle Again"-the winner's saddle as Luke Mobley scored two goals, including the game winner with 5:58 left in regulation time to beat the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars 2-1 Saturday night at the Rec Center.

Mobley scored the lone goal of the first period for the Orioles when he got a pass from Bauer Neudecker and scored from the left slot.

Neither team would score in the second period. The Jaguars kept Oriole goalie Atticus Raasch busy in the second period and they lost Carter Eha when he was checked into the left boards by St. Louis Park's Blake Neudecker. He would receive a five minute major penalty for boarding.

Jefferson would even the score at one in the third period when Nathan Johannes rebounded Bob Lescarbeau's shot from the center slot and put it past Raasch.  Would there be overtime to climax St. Louis Park's version of Hockey Day Minnesota?  Not on this unseasonably warm Saturday night as Mobley went along the left boards, cut into the center slot and scored an unassisted goal.  Jaguar head coach Jeff Lindquist called time out with :34.8 left in regulation time and pulled goalie Evan Redepenning for a sixth attacker.  They would not allow another goal and send the Orioles fans home happy.

St. Louis Park improved their record to 13-4 and will host the Armstrong/Cooper Wings on Tuesday, January 24 at 7 PM at The Rec Center.  Jefferson fell to 3-13-1 and will also be in action on the 24th as they host the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights at 7 PM at the Bloomingon Ice Garden

Hopkins/Park Royals Top Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers

The Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers made the most of their two and a half hour trip down I-35 and led for most of the game but it was Kate Glover who scored the game winning goal with 1:13 left in regulation time to lead the Hopkins/Park Royals to a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon at The Rec Center.

In the first period, the Hilltoppers, without any juniors or seniors on their roster, took the early lead as Olivia Boettcher passed to Emily Lemker in the left slot and Duluth Marshall led 1-0 though they were out shot by the Royals 16-3.

The one on Duluth Marshall's side of the new West Rink scoreboard would remain stationary in the second period.  Hopkins/Park had a golden opportunity to tie the game at one with a five on three situation for 1:40 but they couldn't put the puck past the Hilltoppers freshman goalie Carissa Mudrak.

Late in the third period, the Royals offense would come to life and put the game away with three consecutive goals.  The first would give Mudrak a case of "Typhoid Mary" as Mary Gleason passed to Mary O'Neil and she went around the left side of the net and put the puck in to tie the game. Glover, who will play next season at Harvard, would score the eventual game winner with 1:13 to go as she rebounded her own shot and scored.  Duluth Marshall head coach Sean Storie pulled Mudrak for a sixth attacker and the Royals cashed in with an empty net goal from Annika Patterson with :32 to play.

Hopkins/Park ended their four game losing streak and improved their record to 14-7.  They will return to the Minnetonka Ice Arena on Tuesday, January 24 to face the Minnetonka Skippers at 7 PM. Duluth Marshall lost their ninth straight game and fell to 3-14-3 and will play the Hibbing/Chisholm Bluejackets on Monday, January 23 at 7 PM at the Hibbing Memorial Arena.

Plenty of Hockey Saturday in St. Louis Park

If you don't plan on driving to Stillwater Saturday for Hockey Day Minnesota, there's plenty of action in St. Louis Park as both the Hopkins/Park girls and St. Louis Park boys hockey teams will be at The Rec Center that day.

First up is the Hopkins/Park girls as they host the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers in a 2 PM game.  Both teams have been headed downhill.  The Hilltoppers have lost nine out of their last ten games with a 2-2 against Moose Lake area on December 13.  Hopkins/Park has lost four in a row, including a couple of 7-1 games to Lake Conference rivals Minnetonka and Edina.  It's their second and final home game this season in St. Louis Park.  They won the first game on December 22 as they came from behind to beat the Eagan Wildcats 3-2.

Following the girls game, take a dinner break and return to see the St. Louis Park Orioles battle the Bloomington Jefferson jaguars in boys hockey action at 7 PM.  The Orioles had their nine game winning streak end on January 17 as they were shut out by the Chanhassen Storm 3-0.  Oh how the mighty have fallen as the Jaguars go into Saturday's game with a record of 3-10-2 with the most recent win on January 12 against the East Ridge Raptors. One of Minnesota's most dominant teams in the early 90s has suffered from it's slowest start in years.

So take your pick.  Whether you decide to watch Fox Sports North's day long marathon of high school games, Gopher men's hockey and the Wild or drive down Highway 36 toward Lowell Park in Stillwater, you can save yourself the lengthy trip and head over to the Rec Center for plenty of high school hockey.

Nova Classical Academy Knights Rout Groves Academy Griffins

Noah Olson scored a game high 17 points to lead the Noah Classical Academy Knights to a 65-19 win over the Groves Academy Griffins Friday night in St. Louis Park.

Olson began the scoring for the Knights :33 into the game.  Max Bilcik hit a three pointer to put the Griffins ahead and Isaiah Boudreaux would counter for Nova.  There would be a bright spot for Groves Academy when Malik Bodden's basket would give them the lead.  But that would be the only lead for the Griffins that night as the Knights would go on a 24 point run that would include a three point play from Olson, who would hit from various spots on the court.  Shae Nelson would also contribute to Nova's gigantic run with a couple of three pointers.  Jack Lowe, who got the start for Groves Academy in place of Max Greseth, who was in Washington, DC attending the Presidential Inauguration, would score to end Nova's run.  The Knights led at halftime 42-10.

The second half got off to a good start for the Griffins when Bilcik opened the scoring :10 into the half.  But could shooting and foul trouble would plague Groves Academy as they lost Bodden on fouls and they scored only nine second half points.  The Knights would also get production from their bench players as they would score 16 points.  Groves Academy as well as Nova cleared their benches and gave the reserve players some playing time.

Other players in double figures for the Knights were Boudreaux with 16 points and Nelson with 10.  Bilcik led the Griffins with nine points.

Nova improved their record to 7-6 and returns to action Saturday, January 21 at 3:30 PM against the Christ's Household of Faith Lions at the Salvation Army gym in St. Paul.  Groves Academy fell to 1-12 and begins a two game road trip on Tuesday, January 24 against the Christian Life Academy Hawks in Farmington at 6:30 PM.

Remembering Dick Gautier

Dick Gautier, best known for Hymie the Robot on the sitcom Get Smart as well as his numerous game show appearances, passed away January 14 at the age of 85.

A former stand up comedian, Gautier came to prominence when he originated the role of Conrad Birdie in the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie.  Even though he didn't like rock and roll, he beat out 750 actors for the role of the Elvis-like singer and was nominated for a Tony Award.  Though he was nominated, he didn't reprise his role in the 1963 movie.  Jesse Pearson portrayed Birdie.

But it was his role as Hymie the Robot on Get Smart that also boosted his popularity, though he appeared in only six episodes as the bulky CONTROL agent.  His character was known to take things literally such was the scene when he was asked to kill the lights and he pointed his gun to a light bulb.

Another role he played was Robin Hood on the short-lived Mel Brooks Sherwood Forest parody When Things Were Rotten.  Despite the positive reviews from critics, the show was cancelled after 13 weeks and replaced by the more successful Six Million Dollar Man spin off The Bionic Woman.

He also made many guest appearances on game shows.  Among the shows Gautier was a guest on were Hollywood Squares, Password, Match Game and Liar's Club.  He also made many appearances with his then wife Barbara Stuart on the Goodson-Todman game show Tattletales.

Of all the game shows Gautier did, he only hosted one.  The show was It's Your Bet, that aired in syndication from 1969 to 1973.  He became the host in 1970 after original host Hal March left due to health problems and died in January at the age of 49.  He would host the show for only one season and was replaced by Tom Kennedy in 1971 and Lyle Waggoner the following season after Kennedy was hired to host the ABC game show Split Second.

Gautier had a very prolific career.  He appeared on game shows, sitcoms, movies, worked in theatre and did a lot of cartooning.  He was a versatile talent and he will be missed.  But through reruns of Tattletales on BUZZR, his legacy will live on.

SLP Orioles Cruise Past Bloomington Kennedy Eagles

Coming off a dramatic overtime win Friday night against the North Shore Storm, the St. Louis Park Orioles showed no signs of fatigue as Willy Basill scored a hat trick and Bauer Neudecker added two goals to lead them to a 8-3 win over the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles Saturday afternoon at The Rec Center.

The Orioles won their ninth straight game.

St. Louis Park controlled much of the first period but it was Kennedy who got the early lead in the first period on a left slot goal from Cole Lindstrom.  The Orioles would tie the game on Riley Dvorak's power play goal from the right slot and vault into the lead on Basill's first goal that came off a shot from the left corner boards.

In the second period, the Orioles struck quickly with two goals in the first minute. Grant Plender scored a power play goal on a wraparound rebound and Basill scored his second goal :25 later from the left point.  Basill would get the hat trick as he got a pass on the right doorstep from Brenton Ryan and he scored to put St. Louis Park ahead by three.  The Eagles would end the Orioles run as Zachary Workman got a pass from Edge Choudek an he went top shelf to cut the lead to two.  St. Louis Park would counter :33 later as Luke Mobhley, who got the game winner last night against the Storm, scored off a pass from Conor Schubring.  Lindstrom would wrap up the second period scoring with his second goal.

The third period would be a showcase for Bauer Neudecker as he scored both St. Louis Park goals. His first came on a centering pass from Shea Pekarek and his second came after he got a pass from Austin Stafne, cut through the center slot and put the puck in the net.

St. Louis Park out shot Kennedy 55-17.

The Orioles improved their record to 12-3 and will return to action on Tuesday, January 17 to face the Chanhassen Storm at the Victoria Fieldhoise at 7 PM. The Eagles fell to 3-12-2 and will host the Chaska Hawks on Saturday, January 21 at 7 PM at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

It Takes Overtime for SLP Orioles to Win Eighth Straight Game

Friday night turned out to be a fabulous finish for the St. Louis Park Orioles as Luke Mobley's game winning goal 1:30 in overtime led them to a 4-3 come from behind win over the North Shore Storm at The Rec Center.

It was the first overtime game for the Orioles this season and their eight straight win.

It took :41 into the first period for St. Louis Park to get the early lead when Mobley passed to Willy Basill on the right doorstep and he scored.  The Storm stormed back to tie the game on Chad Nordean's shot from the right slot that went off the left post and into the net.
North Shore, comprised of students from Two Harbors, Silver Bay and Cook County in Grand Marais would take the lead in the second period.  Nordean passed to Mason Meyer and his shot bounced off the plexiglass and into the net.

The Storm would put the Orioles in a two goal hole in the third period when Easton Best's shot went top shelf and entered the net.  But St. Louis Park would bounce back to tie the game with a pair of goals.  First up was Bauer Neudecker,  the Orioles leading scorer who was defended much of the night by the Storm defense, got a pass from Mobley and scored from the left boards to cut the lead to one.  They would even the score at three as Shea Pekarek scored from the left slot with 1:54 left in regulation time.  There wouldn't be any late breaking goals so it was on to the eight minute overtime period.

St. Louis Park wouldn't take long to send the home throng home happy as Bauer Neudecker's shot was saved by Storm goalie Tyler Keech.  But Mobley got into the center slot and rebounded the puck past Keech and into the cage 1:30 into overtime for the game winner.

The Orioles improved their record to 11-3 and return to action on Saturday, January 14 at 1 PM against the Bloomington Kenendy Eagles at The Rec Center.  The game was moved from 2 PM to 1 PM.  The Storm fell to 8-4-1 and host the Virginia/Mountain-Iron Buhl Blue Devils on Tuesday, January 17 at 7 PM at the Lake County Arena in Two Harbors.

Smith's Big Night Leads Math and Science Academy Dragons

Brian Smith was a large part of the equation for the Math and Science Academy Dragons as he scored a game high 36 points to lead them to an 85-48 win over the Groves Academy Griffins Thursday night in St. Louis Park.

Smith broke out of the starting gate early for the Dragons, scoring :05  into the game.  His fellow senior, Andrew Jeyachandran also helped Math and Science Academy get on an opening 12-0 run.  The Griffins didn't get their first basket until there was 15:27 left in the first half on a free throw by Patrick Quinn.  Groves Academy would score their first field goal 1:13 later.  The Griffins also went up against a strong inside presence in center Eric Johnson, who had two blocks.  On the offensive end, the Dragons would go on a 10-0 run that would end when Max Bilcik hit a three pointer.  There were also a couple of old fashioned three point plays.  Jeyachandran would hit one for Math and Science Academy and Max Greseth would be the bright spot for Groves Academy.  Foul trouble would also plague both teams as Seryozha Mzenga and Eric Johnson picked up their third fouls for the Dragons late in the first half and Noah Madson would get his third foul for the Griffins.  Smith would score 24 points by halftime and Math and Science Academy led 54-23.

The Dragons would widen their lead to start the second half with an 8-0 run that included three pointers from Smith and Jeyanchandran. Math and Science Academy would also get support from Ahmed Elhassen as the game would eventually head into running time due to the large margin halfway through the second half.  Bilcik would go on a run, scoring five straight points but there was little that Griffins could do to get back in the game.  Both teams would clear their benches late in the second half and give the reserves a chance to get some playing time.  One reserve from Groves Academy who would make a late contribution was Gabe Gordon as he hit a pair of free throws with :10.2 left in the game.

Other players in double figures for Math and Science Academy were Jeyachandran with 21 points and Elhassen had 16.  Malik Bodden led Grovea Academy with 15 points.  Bilcik added 14.

The Dragons improved their record to 4-5 and will host the Christian Life Academy Hawks on Tuesday, January 17 at 7 PM.  The Griffins lost their sixth straight game and fell to 1-10.  They will also be in action on the 17th as they head to White Bear lake to face the Liberty Classical Academy Lions at 6:30 PM.

Prior to the start of the game, a special ceremony was held, honoring the various teachers who educate the Groves Academy student athletes, including head coach Peter Shutte.

It's Seven Straight Wins for SLP Orioles

Just like the title of a Buster Poindexter hit song from 1987, the St. Louis Park Orioles are "Hot Hot Hot" as Johnny Sorenson scored a hat trick to lead them to a 4-2 win over the Chaska Hawks Tuesday night at the Rec Center.

It was the Orioles seventh straight win.

The Hawks outplayed the Orioles in the first period, out shooting them 18-6.  St. Louis Park goalie Atticus Raasch was kept busy in the net, giving up only one goal.  The goal came off of Blaine Warmert's pass to freshman Rhett Pitlick and he scored from the left slot to give Chaska the early lead.

In the second period, it was Sorenson, who played wide receiver on the Oriole football team last fall that shined in the Rec enter spotlight with a pair of goals. His first came on a rebound of Bauer Neudecker's shot and the second came from the left slot following a pass from Grant Plender that would put St. Louis Park in the lead.

The Orioles would extend their lead to two when Shea Pekarek fed Bauer Neudecker and his shot bounced off of Hawk goalie Ben Urbanciz and entered the net.  But Chaska was not ready for a long bus ride down Highway 212.  Michael Koster would score a power play goal from the left side of Raasch to cut the lead to one.  Would there be overtime on this chilly Tuesday night?  The answer would be no as Hawks had coach Dave Snuggerud pulled Urbanciz with 1:49 to go for a sixth attacker.  It was Sorenson who would get the hat trick as he scored from the right boards with :14 left and it turned out to be the clincher.

St. Louis Park improved their record to 10-3 and hosts the North Shore Storm on Friday, January 13 at 7 PM at The Rec Center.  The game was rescheduled from December 17 due to the snowstorm that hit northern Minnesota.  Chaska fell to 10-5 and hosts the Spring Lake Park Panthers on Thursday, January 12 at 7 PM at the Chaska Community Center.

Six Straight Wins for SLP Orioles

On a chilly Saturday night in St. Louis Park, the Oriole offense heated up as Willy Basill, Luke Mobley and Bauer Neudecker scored two goals apiece to lead them to a 7-2 win over the Mankato East/Loyola Cougars at the Rec Center.

It was the sixth consecutive win for St. Louis Park, who has not lost a game since December 10 when they lost to the Orono Spartans 6-2.

The Orioles struck quickly in the first period when Mobley's shot went off the left pad of Cougar goalie Jack Cusey and into the net :36 into the game.  They would go up by two :45 later as Basill got a pass from Bauer Neudecker and scored from the right doorstep.  Mobley would score his second goal from the left point off a pass from Brenton Ryan. Defense was also part of the equation as Oriole goalie William Pinney made an outstanding save of Mankato East/Loyola's shot by Luke Sellner.  The Cougars prevented a shutout on Sam Schulz's goal that clanked off the post and entered the net with 5:00 left in the period.

In the second period, Bauer Neudecker went down the left boards like a car headed down Wooddale Ave., cut to the right of Cusey and scored a short handed goal.  Bauer Neudcker assisted on the next goal in a series of tic tac toe passes that ended in Basill's second goal.  Nick Salzie would wrap up the second period scoring for Mankato East/Loyola, scoring from the right slot.

St. Louis Park would send the fans to their warm homes happy in the third period as Johnny Sorenson scored from Cusey's right side on a pass from Bauer Neudecker.  There would be no running time in the third period since Bauer Neudecker would conclude the scoring as he rebounded Riley Dvorak's shot.

The Orioles improved their record to 9-3 and host the Chaska Hawks on Tuesday, January 10 at 7 PM at The Rec Center. The Cougars ended their streak of three consecutive ties and fell to 7-4-3.  They wlll head toward I-35 on the 10th to face the Albert Lea Tigers at 7:15 at the Albert Lea City Arena.

St. Louis Park is 3-0 against the Big Nine Conference.  In addition to the win over Mankato East/Loyola, they have beaten Rochester Mayo and Owatonna.

SLP Orioles Win Fifth Straight Game

Bauer Neudecker is on a roll.

Two days after getting a hat trick against the Hopkins Royals, he got another one Thursday night to lead the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 4-2 win over the Holy Angels Stars at The Rec Center.

It didn't take long for Bauer Neudecker to put the puck in the net in the first period when he sped down the center slot like a car heading down Belt Line Blvd. and scored a short handed goal to put the Orioles ahead. The Stars would tie the game at one as Isaac Baron, the lone Holy Angels senior, rebounded Freddie Macciocchi's shot and scored.

St. Louis Park opened the second period as Shea Pekarek's shot was saved by Holy Angels goalie Brendan Pasdo and there was Bauer Neudecker, positioned on the left side of the net and scored on the rebound.  Bauer Neudecker would get his hat trick as he got a pass from Sam Baker in the center slot and the Oriole lead was up to two.  The Stars would strike back :33 later when Macciocchi cut through the center slot and scored an unassisted goal to trim the lead to one.

With 2:13 left in the third period, Holy Angels head coach Trent Palm pulled Pasdo for a sixth attacker and the Orioles would capitalize on the desolate net when Johnny Sorenson picked up the loose puck in the neutral zone and rifled it into the net to clinch the win.

St. Louis Park won their fifth straight game and improved their record to 7-3 and returns to action Saturday, January 7 at 7:30 against the Mankato East Cougars.  It's their third game against a Big Nine Conference school and the Orioles are 2-0 against the Big Nine, with victories over the Rochester Mayo Spartans and the Owatonna Huskies.  Holy Angels fell to 4-5-2 and will also be back in action on the 7th as they take on the fourth ranked team in Class AA, the Edina Hornets.

Calvin Christian Cougars Clobber Groves Academy Griffins

Alex Meybaum scored a game high 13 points and played solid inside defense to lead the Calvin Christian Cougars to a 58-36 win over the Groves Academy Griffins Tuesday night in St. Louis Park.

The first game of 2017 for both teams got off to a bit of a slow start with Drew Dykstra giving the Cougars the early lead with a pair of free throws 1:19 into the game.  Meybaum would score to put Calvin Christian on a 4-0 run.  The Griffins would get on the scoreboard with a three pointer from Patrick Quinn and Noah Madson would hit to put them ahead.  That would be the only bright spot for Groves Academy on this arctic-like Tuesday night as their shooting was just like the weather picture outside, extremely cold.  The Griffins had trouble putting the ball in the basket and going up against a dominant defense presence in Meybaum, whose height was unlisted in the program.  The Cougars would go on a 20-0 run that also included four straight points from Bradley Mateer.  Groves Academy would finally end their scoring drought on Malik Bodden's jumper with 2:09 to go in the first half.  Max Bilcik would also spark a late 7-0 run and Calvin Christian led at halftime 24-12.

The Griffins headed into the second half with some momentum that carried over from late in the first half as Bilcik hit a three pointer to begin the scoring :35 into the half.  But the Cougars would widen their lead as Jaden Schaap scored seven straight points to put the Cougars on a 12-0 run.  Meybaum would also score four consecutive points as the fouls started to pile up  for Groves Academy like rush hour traffic on Highway 100.  Bodden picked up his fourth foul with 11:09 to go and would later foul out.  The bright spot for the Griffins would be Bilcik's five straight points late in the half, two coming on a dunk from the left side of the basket.  With the game pretty much decided, both head coaches, Brad Mateer of the Cougars and Peter Shutte of the Griffins gave the reserves some playing time in the closing minutes.

Other players in double figures for Calvin Christian were Bradley Mateer with 12 points and Schaap added 11.  Bilcik led Groves Academy with 14 points.

The Cougars improved their record to 6-3 and head to Forest Lake on Thursday, January 5 to play the North Lakes Academy Huskies at 7 PM.  The Griffins fell to 1-7 and will also be in action on the 5th as they face the Learning for Leadership Mustangs at 7 PM in northeast Minneapolis.

SLP Orioles Begin 2017 With Three Home Games

After closing 2016 with three straight wins in the Duluth Tournament, the St. Louis Park Orioles boys hockey team begins 2017 with three of five consecutive home games.

The Orioles beat Apple Valley, Owatonna and Duluth Denfeld to improve their record to 6-3.  Two of their three losses were to Lake Conference schools Edina and Wayzata.  They will play their third game against a Lake school on Tuesday, January 3 against the Hopkins Royals.  The royals are off to a slow start with a 3-9 record, two of their three wins coming in last week's South St. Paul tournament.  Hopkins has had a tough time putting the puck in the net, scoring only 19 goals in its first 12 games.

On Thursday, January 5, the Orioles will host the Holy Angels Stars, who lost two of three games last week in the Schwan Cup to Blake and Hudson, WI.  It will be a good tuneup for the Stars since they play four of their next five games against perennial powers Edina, Wayzata, Duluth Marshall and Breck.  They will also play Minneapolis on January 19.  It should be an interesting match up with St. Louis Park.

Wrapping up the week is the Orioles second game this season against a Big Nine Conference school, the Mankato East Cougars.  The Orioles began their regular season by demolishing the Rochester Mayo Spartans 10-0.  The Cougars have a pair of road games this week before they head up Highway 169 to The Rec Center.  They will play at Luverne on the 3rd and head to LeSueur on the 5th.  Five of Mankato East's first 11 games have gone into overtime and the Cougars have a record of 3-1-1 in those contests.  The tie came in the Schwan Cup consolation final against the Princeton Tigers because the Minnesota State High School League doesn't recognize shootouts that is used to decide a winner.

The key to these upcoming games is the continued outstanding play of Bauer Neudecker.  He goes into the new year with 20 goals this season.  The only other Oriole who has scored 10 goals is Johnny Sorenson.  Can the Orioles continue their momentum from the Twin Ports?  Head over to The Rec Center and check out a team that is on the rise in St. Louis Park.

A Tribute to Johnny Canton

The year 2016 ended with the Twin Cities losing one of its most durable radio voices Johnny Canton who passed away from a stroke at the age of 75.

Canton came to the Twin Cities in 1966 to handle the late morning shift on Top 40 powerhouse WDGY before moving to WCCO-FM (later WLTE) in 1977.

In 1978, Canton would begin his association with Twin Cities bowling when he became the host of KSTP-TV's highly rated Bowling for Dollars.  He replaced Tom Ryther, who was let go by the station and went on to NBC owned WKYC-TV in Cleveland.

Canton would also do many commercials for the Twin Cities group Neighborhood Bowling Centers in the early 80s.  The group was formed after KSTP-TV blacked ABC's Pro Bowlers Tour due to lack of interest airing movies and a show on Indian At.  But Canton and the group bought airtime on the station and restored bowling to the Twin Cities airwaves.

Also in the early 80s, Canton would be the host of another local bowling show, a revival of Bowlerama.  The show originally was seen on WCCO-TV where among the hosts was long-time anchorman Dave Moore. Bowlers won prizes by making various combinations with the least being dinner for two at a local Red Lobster and more valuable prizes would be awarded on each season's final show such as a trip to the home of Twins Spring Training, Fort Myers.

This post will wrap up with Canton's signoff at the end of each Bowlerama episode as a way of paying homage to a man who promoted the sport of bowling to the Twin Cities. Go bowling.
