Fifty Years Ago, Four Game Shows Get Cancelled

September 26, 1969.  A sad day for game show fans as NBC cancelled four long running game shows in a major daytime schedule overhaul.  Here's a look back at what was axed and the shows that replaced them.

The first was Tom Kennedy's breakout hit as host, You Don't Say.  It began as a local game show on KTLA in Los Angeles with Jack Barry, in exile due to the quiz show scandals as host.  But when NBC picked up the show to debut in April, 1963, Barry was still damaged goods so Kennedy, the brother of Jack Narz would become host.  The game of famous names and places became one of two afternoon games popular with kids coming home from school.  Though its ratings were still high, NBC cancelled the show and replaced it with the soap opera Bright Promise that would run two and a half seasons.

The other show that was popular with kids was the original version of Match Game, hosted by Gene Rayburn.  The game was a lot different that what viewers would see when CBS revived the show in 1973.  There were two teams consisting of two contestants and a celebrity and the questions were a lot tamer back then such as ""Name a kind of muffin."   The show survived cancellation in 1963 and would run for seven years.  It would be replaced by the comedy game show Letters to Laugh-In, a spinoff of the groundbreaking sketch comedy show.  Hosted by announcer Gary Owens.  It was no laughing matter in the ratings and it was let go after 13 weeks.

Two other shows also departed that day, both produced by Bob Stewart.  The first would be his inaugural show as an independent packager after he left Goodson-Todman Eye Guess.  Hosted by Bill Cullen, the show began in a morning time period before it was moved to the post Jeopardy time period of 12:30 PM and it thrived for over three and a half years.  It would be replaced by the Heatter-Quigley game show Name Droppers, hosted by the Los Angeles radio duo of Al Lohman and Roger Barkley.  A panel of three celebrities had a connection to a "name dropper" and two contestants, comprising a group of 20 would determine the celebrity connection.  After 13 weeks, it was moved to 4 PM ET to replace Letters to Laugh-In and it also tanked in the ratings.  Thirteen weeks later, it would be replaced by a soap opera, the Another World spinoff Somerset.

The other Stewart game show that got cancelled was a show that was Stewart's favorite creation Personality.  Debuting in July, 1967 with Larry Blyden as host, a panel of three celebrities who played for home viewers would guess how celebrities would respond to a question.  In Adam Nedeff's book, TV Game Shows FAQ, Stewart brainstormed about 2000 questions and conducted the interviews himself.  It would have the shortest run of the four departed shows, running a little over two years.

On the brighter side of things, the show would replace Personality would have the most success for the replacements.  Monday, September 29 would mark the debut of the original Sale of the Century.  Taped in New York, the show was hosted by former Maverick star Jack Kelly but he would leave in 1971 and would be replaced by former major league catcher turned sportscaster Joe Garagiola.  The game of questions, answers and instant bargains would run until July, 1973 where it was one of several long running shows axed by then daytime head Lin Bolen to make room for more flashier shows.   It's replacement.  The Wizard of Odds, the first game show hosted by current Jeopardy host Alex Trebek.

Also on the 29th, Sale of the Century's lead in, the long running Concentration would bring back Bob Clayton as host following a ratings decline that resulted from NBC hiring Ed McMahon as host.

It was all part of a mass change in NBC's daytime game show lineup that occurred 50 years ago.

SLP Orioles-Orono Spartans Football Preview

The second half of the Minnesota high school football season begins this week as the St. Louis Park Orioles head to Pesonen stadium in Long Lake to face the Orono Spartans.

Both the Orioles and Spartans enter the game with identical 1-3 records.  St. Louis Park had a Homecoming train wreck as the Spring Lake Park Panthers routed the Orioles 49-14.  Orono got their first win of the season with a 14-7 win over the Waconia Wildcats.

In checking the box score and statistics from last week's game on mnfootballhub.com, there were no stats mentioned for the Orioles.  But the rush defense sprung a leak as the Panthers ran for a total of 438 yards to only 36 passing yards.  Henry Dennis ran 10 times for 189 yards and quarterback Zach Dunbar had 15 carries for 132 yards.  Both Dennis and Dubar had two touchdowns apiece.  The good news from the game was Sajid Nathim scored a touchdown on a 95 yard kickoff return.

The Spartans scored all their 14 points in the first half to hold off the Wildcats.  Danny Striggow, who has committed to Minnesota next season scored on a 36 yard touchdown run to help snap a three game losing streak where they scored only seven points in the first three games.  They have played a tough schedule that started with Benilde-St. Margaret's, continued with Cooper and face a state tournament team from last year in Chaska.

What St. Louis Park needs to do to beat Orono is to tighten the run defense and quarterback aaron Ellingson has to take care of the ball and not cause a lot of turnovers.

Orono's keys to the game include finding a way get the offense going and create more scoring opportunities.

The weather picture on Friday calls for temperatures in the 60s.  Bring a jacket if you plan to attend the game that starts at 7 PM.

Spring Lake Park Panthers Spoil SLP Orioles Homecoming

Zach Dunbar and Henry Dennis were a menace to the massive throng in attendance for the St. Louis Park Orioles Homecoming football game as they scored two touchdowns apiece to lead the Spring Lake Panthers to a 49-14 rout Friday night.

The Panthers scored the first quarter's only touchdown on Dennis' 37 yard run down the left side to take a 7-0 lead.  On the Orioles first drive, quarterback Aaron Ellingson was intercepted by Jesse sills, returning the ball to Spring Lake Park.

Spring Lake Park would put the game away in the second quarter.  Their first touchdown came following a St. Louis Park encroachment penalty and Dunbar, the Panthers quarterback kept the ball and ran 37 yards to increase the lead to 14-0.  Spring Lake Park would go up by 21 on Dennis' second touchdown of the game, a 48 yard run.  Good news for the fans on the St. Louis Park side of the stadium.  There would be no shutout.  Sajid Nathim received the kickoff and ran like traffic heading down Minnetonka Blvd. to score a 95 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 21-6.  The Panthers would wrap up the first half scoring on Dunbar's second touchdown, a three yard keeper run that gave them a 28-6 halftime lead.

Heading to the third quarter, there would be a bright spot for the Oriole offense as Nathim would convert on fourth down and two.  But it would be for naught as the Panthers got the ball back and Dunbar would run for 25 yards to the St. Louis Park one yard line and Brian Orellana would score with 2:23 left to increase the margin to 35-6.

The fourth quarter began as a bad snap on an Oriole punt entered the end zone and it was recovered by the Panthers Jacob Fritz to build their lead to 42-6.  As the game entered running time due to the large margin, St. Louis Park would get the offense in sync when Ellingson threw a 15 yard touchdown pass to McCabe Dvorak and caught a two point conversion to trim the lead to 42-14.  Ellingson would be finished for the evening as he would be replaced under center by William Dvorak.  Spring Lake Park would conclude the scoring when Aaron Payne would be a pain for the Oriole defense, scoring on a 33 yard touchdown run.

The St. Louis Park Homecoming royalty was presented at halftime as wide receiver Tobyous Davenport was crowned king and the queen was Hattie Kugler.

The Panthers improved their record to 2-2 and will head to Hopkins on Friday, September 27 for a 7 PM game against the Royals.  The Orioles fell to 1-3 and will also be in action on the 27th, heading down I-394 to Orono to face the Spartans at 7 PM.

SLP Oriole Boys Win in Overtime-Girls Shutout Jefferson

The sun was shining bright at St. Louis Park Thursday as the host Orioles faced the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars with the boys needing overtime to beat the Jaguars 3-2 and the girls recorded their fourth consecutive shutout with a 3-0 win over Jefferson.

First up was the boys as Thomas Salamzadeh got a goal and assisted on Claudy Zua's game winner with 2:02 left in the second overtime to lead the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 3-2 win over the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars.

Neither team would send a ball into the net in the first half.  The Jaguars would vault into the lead in the second half on a high kick from Jack Simonet that landed in the net.  Could Jefferson pull the upset over second ranked St. Louis Park?  It wouldn't happen as the Jaguars got an own goal that was credited to the Orioles Randy Mayele to tie the game at one and send it into overtime.

Both teams would tally in the first overtime.  Jefferson would regain the lead as St. Louis Park would be a victim of an own goal, thus crediting the Jaguar goal to Christopher Ceurvorst.  The Orioles would even the score on Salamzadeh's line drive goal with :26.7 left in the first overtime to tie the game at two.  It would be Salamzadeh who would set up the clincher in the second overtime as his shot was saved by Jefferson goalkeeper Jonas Hinds and Zua would score on a rebound with 2:02 to go and it would wrap up the victory.

Oriole head coach Chato missed the game due to tending to his ailing father in Costa Rica, leaving the team once again in the hands of assistants Pat Hartman and Bob Decker.

St. Louis Park improved their record to 10-0 and returns to action on Tuesday, September 24 as they head to Benilde-St. Margaret's to face the Red Knights at 7 PM.  Jefferson lost their third straight game and fell to 3-8.  They will head down I-35 on Saturday, September 21 to battle the Lakeville North Panthers at 1 PM.

Over to the girls game as the St. Louis Park Orioles got scoring balance from three players en route to a 3-0 shutout of the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars.

It didn't take long for the Orioles to take the lead as Aliviah McClinton's shot bounced into the net :41 into the game to put the Orioles ahead.  It would be the only goal of the first half and St. Louis Park led 1-0.

The Orioles would go up by two in the second half on Olivia Brown's center slot goal.  The Jaguars fell victim to an own goal when the ball deflected off Lexi Evans and entered the net.  Dare Kroeten would get credited with the goal as St. Louis Park would play outstanding defense to preserve their fourth consecutive shutout.

St. Louis Park improved their record to 6-2-2.  In their six wins this season, the Orioles have outscored their opponents 21-0 and have scored 13 unanswered goals since the 4-0 loss to Champlin Park September 7.  They will have a tough test on Tuesday, September 24 when they head to Benilde-St. Margaret's to take on the Red Knights at 5 PM.  BSM has not lost a game since they were beaten by Blake 2-1 August 29.  Bloomington Jefferson returns to action on Saturday, September 21 as they head to Golden Valley to face the Breck Mustangs at 3 PM.

Spring Lake Park Panthers-SLP Orioles Football Preview

Get ready for Homecoming football 2019 as the Battle of the SLPs  comes to St. Louis Park as the Orioles face the Spring Lake Park Panthers Friday, September 20.

Both the Panthers and the Orioles head into the midpoint of the regular season with identical 1-2 records.  They're also coming off defeats last Friday with the Orioles getting clobbered by the cooper Hawks 49-25 and the Panthers falling to the Coon Rapids Cardinals 23-14.

There was a bright spot for St. Louis Park last week in New Hope when running back Sajid Nathim had 26 carries for 171 yards and reached the end zone three times.  The Orioles trailed 21-13 at halftime but cooper would put the game away in the second half as quarterback Joseph Russell threw for 228 yards and three touchdown passes and ran for 98 yards.

On the defensive side for St. Louis Park, Tony Sadler sacked Joseph Russel and had 10 total tavkles.  He will need to be a factor along with the remainder of the Oriole defense.

As for the Panthers, in their second season under head coach John Stewart, they still employ a high powered running game.  Quarterback Zach Dunbar completed seven of 12 passes for 84 yards, including a touchdown pass to Kaleb Skelly.  Dunbar also ran 24 times for 85 yards.  The Panther defense was anchored by Blaine Cooper who had 12 total tackles and Joey Sorenson added 11.

The key to the Orioles having a happy Homecoming is for Nathim to continue where he left off last week against Cooper and the defense has to slow down the Panther rushing attack.

The key to the Panthers beating the Orioles is for the offensive line to create opportunities for Dunbar and for the defense to slow down St. Louis Park quarterback Aaron Ellingson.

If you're going to the game, get there early.  A large Homecoming crowd is anticipated.  You also might want to bring an umbrella.  Game time is 7 PM.

It Takes One Goal For SLP Orioles to Beat Blake Bears

Two highly rated boys soccer powerhouses battled in St. Louis Park Tuesday night as Dan Lainsbury scored the game's only goal with 11:10 left in regulation time to lead the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 1-0 win over the defending Class A champion Blake Bears.

Neither team would tally in the first half.  However, the Orioles got a crushing blow when Niko Pantazides was issued a red card and he was ejected from the game.  St. Louis Park would have to play shorthanded the remainder of the game.  What kept the Orioles, ranked second in Class AA behind the Edina Hornets was defense.  They put pressure on a Bears offense that has scored 40 unanswered goals.

The streak would come to an end when Nick Riley made a centering pass to Lainsbury and he would send the ball into the net.  Blake was unable to tally, though a shot went off the crossbar and the St. Louis Park defense would hold on for the win.

Tuesday night was also Senior night.  At halftime, nine Oriole seniors and their parents were honored for their years of service to the boys soccer program.

Pat Hartman, who coached the team along with Bob Decker in head coach Chato's absence game his thoughts on how the Orioles managed to beat the Bears.

"I'm really proud of the boys tonight.  They played their hearts out.  They executed their game plan and they played well.

Hartman also stated that following Pantazides' disqualification, they responded well and played hard.

St. Louis Park improved their record to 9-0 and hosts the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars on Thursday, September 19 at 5 PM.  Blake fell to 9-1 and travels to Golden Valley on Wednesday, September 18 against the Breck Mustangs at 7:30 PM.

STMA Knights Storm Past Shakopee Sabers

Though the weather was a bit chilly Friday night, it didn't stop a multitude of blue and gold clad fans from packing the main seating area to see Kolby Gartner throw three touchdown passes to lead the  host St. Michael-Albertville Knights to a 35-7 win over the Shakopee Sabers.

After preventing the Sabers from crossing the goal line on fourth and goal, the Knights got the ball and Gartner threw a beautiful spiral down the center of the field that Brandon Langdok docked in his mitts to haul in a 71 touchdown pass to put STMA ahead 7-0.

The STMA backfield was bolstered by junior David Collins who gained 21 yards as he broke two Shakopee tackles and was brought down first and goal at the Saber four yard line.  But Collins was not done yet as he scored on a four yard run to put the Knights ahead 14-0.  There would be no shutout for the Knights as Shakopee quarterback kept the ball for a third down conversion of 20 yards and Donovan Monroe ran down the right side of the field for a 22 yard touchdown to cut the margin to 14-7.  STMA, one of the top teams in Class AAAAA football would close out the first half scoring on Gartner's 14 yard touchdown pass to Samuel Caron with :02 left in the half giving the Knights a 21-7 halftime lead.

Neither team would tally in the third quarter though the Knight defense would sack Bigaouette twice.  The first was by Luke Johnson and the second came from Boston Merila.

In the fourth quarter, the Knights would put the game away with a pair of touchdowns.  The first touchdown came following a 24 yard run by Collins that would spot the ball first and goal at the Shakopee four yard line and Ty Songstad hit the high note for STMA with a four yard touchdown run to increase the margin to 28-7.  Songstad would reach the end zone again when he caught an eight yard pass from Gartner with 4:03 to play.

Collins would lead the Knights offensive attack with 19 carries for 165 yards.  The Sabers had 218 in total offense.

STMA improved their record to 3-0 and will head to Plymouth next Friday, September 20 to face the Wayzata Trojans at 7 PM.  Shakopee fell to 1-2 and will also be in action on the 20th as the take on the Eden Prairie Eagles at 7 PM at TCO Stadium in Eagan.

SLP Orioles-Cooper Hawks Football Preview

Two teams with identical 1-1 records will battle Friday night as the St. Louis Park Orioles head up to New Hope to take on the Cooper Hawks.

It will be the first meeting between the two schools since last season's Section 5AAAAA semifinals where the Hawks ended the Orioles season with a resounding 35-7 victory.

Last week, St. Louis Park came back from a 17-0 deficit and scored 27 unanswered points to beat the Waconia Wildcats 27-17.  Quarterback Aaron Ellingson ran for two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass to Sajid Nathim.  Ellingson also payed defense and had 12 tackles.  Tobyous Davenport had seven tackles.

As for the Hawks, they came back from a season opening loss to Waconia and ousted the Orono Spartans 35-7.  Quarterback Joseph Russell completed 10 of 18 passes for 224 yards and passed for three touchdowns.  Sherrod Russell ran 18 times for 94 yards, including a touchdown.  Corneilus Wooten caught two touchdown passes for 125 yards.

The key to the Orioles beating the Hawks is for Ellingson to spread the ball around on offense.  It doesn't have to be The Aaron Ellingson Show since he has Nathim in the backfield and Davenport, Cole Ewald and McCabe Dvorak.  They also need to contribute to the offensive attack.  The defense will need to shut down The Brothers Russell, who were key components in the Cooper win over Orono.

The Russells are also the key to the Hawks beating the Orioles.  The momentum from the Orono win needs to carry over.  As for the Hawks defense, they will need to force turnovers and pursue Ellingson.  One player who stood out on defense for Cooper is Kellen Andler, who had five tackles and two sacks against the Spartans.

The weather picture should be better than Thursday.  Game time is 7 PM.

SLP Orioles Batlle Rain to Sweep Cooper Hawks

On a wet Thursday night, the St. Louis Park Oriole soccer teams battled heavy rain and a lightning delay to sweep the Hawks with the boys winning 6-2 and the girls shutting out the Hawks 2-0.

Neither heavy rain or a lightning delay could keep the St. Louis Park boys soccer team from getting two goals apiece from Dan Lainsbury and Nick Riley that led the Orioles to a 6-3 win over the Cooper Hawks.

The Orioles got on the scoreboard when Bennett Kouame went down the left side of the field and fed Lainsbury but the ball deflected off his left foot and entered the net.  Lainsbury helped set up the second St. Louis Park goal :56 later with a centering pass to Riley and he sent it into the goal.  Riley would pick up an assist on the third goal on a pass to Lainsbury for his second goal of the game.  Unfortunately, the game was stopped with 23:49 left in the first half due to lightning and according to Minnesota State High School League, there would be a minimum delay of 30 minutes.  The good news was the game resumed following the delay as Abdirahman Mohamed would help the Hawks avoid a shut out and the Orioles led at halftime 3-1.

St. Louis Park would score two second half goals in a span of 1:01.  Riley would score his second goal from the left side and Kouame lined one to the net to put the Orioles ahead 5-1.  They would increase the margin to five on a penalty kick goal from Andrew Kneiser.  The Hawks would conclude the scoring with 2:13 to play.  Following the game, the identity of the Cooper goal scorer was revealed.  It was Henry Suah.

Orioles head coach Chato was not present because he was out of town and assistant coaches Pat Hartman and Bob Decker ran the team in his absence.

St. Louis Park remains unbeaten at 8-0 and will have a tough test coming their way on Tuesday, September 17 when they host the unbeaten Blake Bears at 7 PM.  The Bears have won their last six games via shutout and have outscored their opponents 38-0.  Cooper fell to 1-6 and hosts the South St. Paul Packers on Saturday, September 14 at 5 PM.

Now to the girls game as Lola Ruff and Alma Beaton tallied in the first half to lead the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 2-0 win over the Cooper Hawks.

Ruff would open the scoring for the Orioles with a left side goal and Beaton would score from the center slot to put St. Louis Park ahead by two at halftime.

Neither team would score in the second half though Beaton almost scored her second goal of the game but the ball bounced off the right crossbar.

St. Louis Park improved their record to 4-2-2 and heads to Minneapolis South on Monday, September 19 to take on the Tigers at 6 PM.  Cooper dropped to 4-3 and will head down I-694 to Stillwater on Saturday, September 14 to face the St. Croix Prep Lions at 10 AM.

Three Game Shows Debut and a Host Departs

September 8, 1969.  A significant day in game show history that's highlighted with the return of a game show classic and the death or its original host.

Go back to the fall of 1968 when Mark Goodson and Bill Todman revived What's My Line in syndication as a five day a week show following the cancellation of the original John Daly version in 1967 along with I've Got a Secret, To Tell the Truth and Password.  The What's My Line revival became a syndicated success and saved the company from layoffs following the mass cancellations.  It also encouraged Goodson and Todman to revive more of their classic formats.

The first to return was To Tell the Truth.  Initially, Goodson was planning to go the route of Password after it was axed by CBS in 1967 and rerun the final daytime season in syndication.  When What's My Line became a hit, Goodson decided to bring back To Tell the Truth in the fall of 1969 and abandon the reruns.  Bud Collyer, who hosted both the daytime and nighttime To Tell the Truth was offered the hosting job but due to declining health, he turned it down.  Instead, the new host would be Garry Moore, who would come out of retirement after a short-lived revival of his variety show was cancelled in 1967 and replaced by the popular but controversial Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour would occupy the host's chair.

Peggy Cass, Kitty Carlisle and Orson Bean would return to their panel spots.  The only regular panelist who did not make the transition to the revival was Tom Poston.  His spot would be taken by Bill Cullen, who also subbed for Moore as host when he was on vacation.  Bean would be a regular the first season and after he no longer became a regular, a guest panelist such as Gene Rayburn would occupy his spot.

On the same day that many stations aired the new To Tell the Truth for the first time, Collyer passed away from a circulatory ailment at the age of 61.

Another show that was originally hosted by Collyer would debut the following week in syndication.  Beat the Clock would return with Jack Narz replacing Collyer as host.  Two couples would continue to perform stunts against the clock.  The major change was the addition of a celebrity guest that would help the couples on a stunt.

Two firsts would occur for the Beat the Clock revival.  It was the first Goodson-Todman game show to be produced in Canada since production was moved from New York to Montreal the following season to cut costs and sell to Canadian television.  It would also be the first game show to utilize Gene Wood as an announcer. Wood would replace Narz as host in 1972 after he left due to his travel expenses commuting from California to Montreal.  It was the stepping stone to a successful career at the mike as he would announce Family Feud and Card Sharks as well as many other game shows.

The third and last Goodson-Todman game to debut was He Said, She Said, the first game show hosted by former major league catcher Joe Garagiola.  The show would be sponsored by Holiday Inn and featured four celebrity couples who played for a member of the studio audience.  One spouse would be offstage while the other would guess how they would respond to a question.  A correct response earned 25 points and an incorrect match deducted 10.  The winning couple earned the audience member a week's day at a Holiday Inn.

He Said, She Said would have the shortest run of the three, airing for only one season.  But the show would return in 1974 with a new title Tattletales and a new host Bert Convy.  The show, airing after CBS' top rated Match Game would run from 1974 to 1978 and returned in 1982 and ran for two more years.

The fall of 1969 would be fruitful for Goodson-Todman as they would now have four shows on the air and three would have long and successful runs.  What's My Line would run for another five years, Beat the Clock would also have a five year run and To Tell the Truth air for nine years, with Garagiola replacing Moore for the final season in 1977.  The syndicated game show genre that began with Truth or Consequences in 1966 was in full force.

SMB Wolfpack Swarms Past Spectrum Sting

The Spectrum Sting defense was seeing Redd Friday night as sophomore Sanjay Redd scored two touchdowns to highlight a 28 point second quarter that led the SMB Wolfpack to a 51-16 victory at Gordy Aamoth Jr. Stadium on the Blake School campus in Hopkins.

Spectrum, based in Elk River took the early lead on Elias Aberra's 66 yard run down the left side to put the Sting ahead 6-0.  Tack on the two point conversion and the lead vaulted to 8-0.  But that would be the only bright spot for Spectrum as the Wolfpack would even the score as quarterback Jalen Suggs on fourth down and seven kept the ball, changed directions and entered the end zone.  It would be 8-8 at the end of the first quarter.

SMB would put the game away in the second quarter with 28 straight points.  Suggs would prove that he is one of Minnesota's top high school athletes by turning two consecutive bad center snaps into outstanding plays.  The first turn what would be a double digit yard loss into an 11 yard game and the second, after being pursued by a swarm of white Sting jerseys, he fired a 17 yard pass to Caleb Hoilien to put the Wolfpack ahead 15-8.  SMB would get the ball back following a blocked punt recovered by Toby Jacobson at the Sting one yard line.  After a illegal procedure penalty sending them back five yards to the six, Redd ran the ball into the end zone.

It wasn't all offense for the combined team from St. Paul Academy, Minnehaha Academy and Blake.  Defense would also be a factor as they recovered a fumble at the Spectrum seven yard line and Redd would score his second touchdown with a seven yard run up the middle.  As soon as the Sting got the ball back, they lost it again on a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Michael Hall and he scored the touchdown to put the Wolfpack ahead 36-8 at halftime.

First year Wolfpack head coach Chris Goodwin took out Suggs and numerous starters in the second half with the game decided.  Elijah Wade would replace Suggs at quarterback and he would capitalize on a fourth down conversion with a 16 yard gain.  He would also cross the goal line after escaping a Spectrum tackle and scoring from 15 yards to increase the score to 44-8.

Another reserve would be credited with a touchdown as the game headed into the fourth quarter.  James Killilea would score on a four yard touchdown run and the Wolfpack led 51-8.  The Sting would end their lengthy scoring drought on Aberra's second touchdown in the final minute of the game, scoring from 38 yards.

The Wolfpack improved their record to 2-0 and will head to West St. Paul on Friday, September 13 to face the St. Croix Lutheran Crusaders at 7 PM.  The Sting fell to 0-2 and will also be in action on the 13th, hosting the Fridley Tigers in a 4 PM start.

SLP Orioles-Waconia Wildcats Football Preview

The St. Louis Park Oriole football team heads down Highway 5 Friday night for their first road game of the season and second straight against a Carver County opponent as they battle the Waconia Wildcats.

The Orioles opened their 2019 last Thursday night against a team who played in last year's Class AAAAA state tournament the Chaska Hawks and got shut out 23-0.  New Hawks quarterback Grif Wurtz reached the end zone three times on keeper touchdowns.

As for the Orioles, they had scoring opportunities throughout the game.  In the first quarter, Aaron Ellingson, also the quarterback, intercepted a Wurtz pass but St. Louis Park lost the ball on downs.  Turnovers would also plague the Orioles and McCabe Dvorak almost put St. Louis Park on the scoreboard but his touchdown was called back due to a pass interference penalty.

Waconia began the regular season last week, heading to New Hope to face the Cooper Hawks and got two second quarter touchdowns from Tim Stapleton and a strong defense that led them to a 14-12 win.  Cooper cut the lead to two points :55 into the fourth quarter on Joseph Russell's touchdown pass to David Conners.  The Hawks would go for the two point conversion but the pass was incomplete.  The Wildcat defense held Joseph Russell to -23 rushing while his brother Sherrod carried 13 times for 54 yards.  Waconia was led by Stapleton's 19 carries for 98 yards.

The key to the Orioles beating Waconia is find opportunities to get the ball over the goal line.  Ellingson has to find the open receivers and Sajid Nathim has to establish the ground game like he did last season.  The defense has to shut down Stapleton and the Wildcats rushing attack as well as force turnovers.

Waconia will have to use their strong defense anchored by Erix Groneveld and Jack Fritz and the backfield will need another solid game from Stapleton.

No threat of rain is in Friday night's weather picture.  Game time is 7 PM.
