Fifth Years Ago-CBS Debuts Two New Game Shows and a Soap Opera

In the previous post, HSGN looked back at the fiftieth anniversary of the cancellation of the long running NBC game show Concentration and the start of a new era for the network's daytime game show lineup under new vice president Lin Bolen.  But CBS would also debut two new game shows and a soap opera that is still on the air 50 years later and that's the subject of part two.

While NBC debuted the new game show Baffle, the first with neon lights, CBS would move The Price is right to an afternoon time period and debut a new game show from Bob Stewart that would spawn numerous revivals.  The show, The $10,000 Pyramid.

"Keep your eye on the Winner's Circle," intoned announcer Bob Clayton as the former Concentration host opened the first episode of The $10,000 Pyramid," hosted by Dick Clark.  The show, that aired in between The Joker's Wild and Gambit would be the only CBS game show to be taped in New York while the others were taped in Hollywood.  Stewart would finally move his production company to California in 1979.

Pyramid was derived from Stewart's biggest success at Goodson-Todman, Password.  There were still two celebrity-civilian teams, but instead of a player giving one word clues, they can give a description to get their partner to guess the word without using part of the answer.  The team with the most points got to go to The Winner's Circle, where one member of the team would give a list of items that helped their partner guess the subject.  If they got all six subjects in 60 seconds, they won $10,000.

Pyramid did well in the ratings, easily beating Baffle.  But when Bolen moved Jeopardy from the noon slot to opposite Pyramid, the ratings dropped and after over a year, CBS canceled the show.  But lo and behold, ABC picked up the game and six weeks later, Clark was on the network where he hosted American Bandstand every Saturday afternoon.  The show would be more successful and run until June 1980.  There would be several other revivals since then, including its return to CBS in September of 1982 and the current version that airs in the summer on ABC that's hosted by former NY Giant, Michael Strahan.

The other game show that debuted on CBS was the first game show hosted by Geoff Edwards titled Hollywood's Talking.  Slotted after the relocated Price is Right, the show was a revival of a 1967 game show hosted by Lloyd Thaxton and created by Jack Barry.  Barry did not receive credit because he was still blacklisted due to his involvement in the quiz show scandals of the 1950s.  Like the original, three contestants would compete to identify the subject celebrities were talking about in a series of film clips.  The pot started at $150 and decreased as long as the film was unidentified to a minimum of $50.  First player to reach $250 won the game and played the Short subjects bonus round for more of their winnings.

Edwards and Barry did not get along, especially after Barry told him to change his voice because he didn't like the way he sounded.  Unfortunately, viewers opted for soaps instead of Hollywood's Talking, and after 13 weeks, it was canceled and replace by the much more successful Match Game revival that ran until April 1979.  Edwards and Barry would bury the hatchet in 1980 when Edward would become the host of the short-lived syndicated game show Play the Percentages.

Wrapping up this post is the soap opera that also debuted the same day that is celebrating its 50th anniversary, The Young and the Restless.  A replacement for another soap, Where the Heart is, it was like other soaps at that time, a half hour.  It became very popular and expanded to an hour in February 1980.  Y&R, as it's sometimes known by fans, is to this day, the top rated soap opera and bolstered by it's lead in The Price is Right in many markets and local news that airs at noon in the Eastern Time Zone.  Though many cast members have come and gone, the one stabilizing factor is the theme song, also known as Nadia's Theme, that was a Top 40 hit for Barry DeVorzon and Perry Botkin Jr.

So that's how daytime TV change 50 years ago.  New hosts, including the man who hosted more than 8000 episodes of Jeopardy, Alex Trebek as well as a soap opera that's still popular with several generations.

Fifty Years Ago-A Game Show Era Ends and a New One Begins

Fifty years ago on March 23, 1973, a game show era came to an end and a new era would begin when television's longest running game show at that time, Concentration aired its final episode.

For most of the 1960s, Concentration would air opposite daytime sitcom reruns on CBS.  ABC was much of a nonfactor, though the network aired the original Price is Right with Bill Cullen following NBC's cancellation in 1963.  There was also a forerunner of Entertainment Tonight titled Dateline Hollywood that was hosted by Joanna Barnes and Rona Barrett and a talk show starring Dick Cavett.  Those two shows had short runs and ABC has not had any shows in the 10:30 ET period since then.

But on September 4, 1972, CBS would shake up daytime TV with the debut of three new game shows.  They were The Joker's Wild, Gambit and the show the network put up against Concentration that would become TV's longest running game show, a revival of The Price is Right.

Within weeks, The Price is Right would be the show that would cut into Concentration's ratings dominance as the long running game lost a lot of its audience.

The Price is Right, taped at Television City in Hollywood, was bright, vibrant and flashy and like the shows it bookend, had a synthesized sound track while Concentration had a static, older look and was one of the last game shows to use an organist.

To make matters worse, in early 1973, NBC hired a new vice president of daytime programming, Lin Bolen.  Hard driving and ambitious and also the model for Faye Dunaway's character in the movie Network, Bolen did not like what she saw in the network's game show lineup.  She felt the sets were dated and the network attracted an older audience, including a show that was popular with college students and people on their lunch hour, the original version of Jeopardy.

Concentration producer Norm Blumenthal, who also created every rebus puzzle on the air and for the popular home game, mention in the documentary Thank You for Playing Concentration that he had a couple of confrontations with Bolen.  The first came after someone in the audience shouted out the puzzle solution so Blumenthal awarded a contestant a car.  Bolen responded by saying. "Give the other contestant the car!"  Blumenthal told Bolen to shut up and ejected her from the control room.  She also pressured Blumenthal to upgrade the set and award more expensive prizes.  Blumenthal refused and on March 23, it would be the end of Concentration.

The final puzzle on the show was "You've been more than kind."  None of the contestants solved the puzzle because time ran out, so host Bob Clayton on direction from Blumenthal, split the Birthday Present and awarded both contestants $700.  Following a commercial, Clayton would say goodbye and that ended Concentration.

On Monday, March 26, NBC debuted the first game show under Bolen's regime, a revival of the syndicated game show PDQ, with a new title Baffle.  It would be the first game show to utilize neon lights.  Future NBC sportscaster Dick Enberg would host.  NBC's timing couldn't have been worse.  CBS debuted a new game show, which will be part of the next post The $10,000 Pyramid and it would trounce Baffle in the daytime ratings.  The show would change to all-celebrity format six months later and would be canceled in March 1974.

The same day in addition, to Pyramid, CBS debuted another game show and a soap opera.  More details in the next post.

1:00:   Border West (Seed 5) vs. Cherry (Seed 4)

3:00:  Sacred Heart vs. New Life Academy (Seed 2)

5:00:  Mankato Loyola vs. Spring Grove (Seed 3)

                           EXAMINING THE FIELD

While the rest of the state tournament field gets the day off since the Timberwolves are in action against the Hawks, there's plenty of exciting Class A  basketball at The Barn.  Leading off the day's action will be the Nevis Tigers, playing in their third straight tournament and sixth overall against the top seeded Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights.  The Tigers enter the tournament on an eight game winning streak, including a win over the Barnum Bombers in the Section 5 final.  The Knights are in their eighth state tournament and almost went undefeated until they lost to the Dawson Boyd Blackjacks by two points in the Camden Conference final.  R-T-R has won three state titles, the last coming in 2018.  Will this year be their fourth?

A new entry takes the Barn's elevated floor for the second game as the fifth seeded Border West Buccaneers battle the fourth seeded Cherry Tigers.  You won't find Border West in your Minnesota atlas because the team is comprised of students from Wheaton, Herman, Norcross, Clinton, Graceville and Beardsley.  Border West has been playing outstanding basketball, not losing a game since December 29.  They will face the fourth seeded Cherry Tigers, featuring the Three Asumas, Noah, Isaiah and Isaac.  Gopher fans can look forward to seeing Isaac in action because he committed to playing for Ben Johnson in 2024.  It should be an interesting match up.

Making the trip from East Grand Forks for the second straight year is the Sacred Heart Eagles.  The Eagles have won 10 of their last 11 games and face the second seeded New Life Academy Eagles, in their fourth trip to state.  New Life Academy has won 10 straight games and led by Erick Reader.  Who will win The Battle of the Eagles?

Closing the quarterfinal session is the Mankato Loyola Crusaders and the third seeded Spring Grove Lions.  There's been plenty of outstanding boys basketball in Mankato this winter with Mankato East in the Class AAA tournament and the Crusaders heading to Minneapolis for the first time since 2004.  The Crusaders were the second seed in the Section 2 South Subsection and beat Cedar Mountain to earn their seventh state tournament trip.  The Lions are in their second state tournament and first since 2019.  High school sports fans might recognize some of the Spring Grove athletes who played in the Nine Man football final but lost to Mountain Iron-Buhl.  Can they bring home a state title in boys basketball?

Plenty of high school boys basketball action coming up this week.

Opening up the Class AA portion of the state tournament is the lone first time team in the field, the Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles.  The Eagles, seeded second in Section 3, have a tall task ahead as they face the top seeded Holy Family Catholic Fire.  The Fire have been the top ranked team most of the season and they have two players at 6'11"  The Victoria based school are the favorites to bring home the championship trophy but can the first time Eagles pull off the upset?

Wrapping up the Target Center portion of the day's festivities is the return of the Minnehaha Academy Redhawks, the fifth seed that's playing in their 11th state tournament and sixth straight.  They face the fourth seeded Maple River Eagles, in their eighth tournament and first since 20-16.  The two teams met in the second game of the season in Mapleton December 3 with the Eagles picking up a 68-63 win.  who will win the rematch?

Heading to The Barn where the Pequot Lakes Patriots return for the second straight year and fifth overall against another five time tourney team, the second seeded Albany Huskies. Purple and white clad fans will return to Minneapolis after the Albany girls fell to Providence Academy in the Class AA title game.  Can the boys head home happy up I-94 with a championship trophy if they likely beat Holy family in Saturday's title game or will Pequot Lakes be on their quest to their first state championship?

The final game of the day pits two teams from six towns as the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels face the third seeded Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs.  The Rebels were the third seed in section 8 and defeated the top seeded Thief River Falls Prowlers in overtime to earn their first trip to Minneapolis since 2016.     The Bulldogs are playing in their first state tournament since 2012 and have gone 23-1 since the calendar changed to 2023, including a Section 1 final win against the top seeded Lake City Tigers.  Can P-E-M continue their run?

2023 MINNESOTA STATE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS AAA BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINAL SCHEDULE

(Games played Tuesday, March 21 at Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus)

10:00:  St. Francis vs. Totino-Grace (Seed 1)

12:00:  Alexandria (Seed 5) vs. Mankato East (Seed 4)

2:00:  Hermantown vs. Orono (Seed 2)

4:00:  Stewartville vs. DeLaSalle (Seed 3)

                                EXAMINING THE FIELD

The Williams Arena portion of the 2023 State Boys Basketball Tournament as the St. Francis Fighting Saints fought their way in the Section 7 final with a one point win over the top seeded Princeton Tigers.  St. Francis, in their 6th state tournament and first since 2015 have a tougher battle ahead in the top seeded and defending Class AAA champion Totino-Grace Eagles.  The Eagles, in their seventh state tournament have put a lot of miles on their team bus with games in South Dakota and Wisconsin.  They also played a tough in-state schedule against Class AAAA powers Lakeville North and Hopkins.  They are the favorites to bring a second state title trophy back to Fridley.

Another state tournament, another trip down I-94 for Alexandria Cardinal fans as they head back to The Barn to see the fifth seeded Cardinals battle the fourth seeded Mankato East Cougars.  Alexandria, in their eight trip to state is on a 12 game winning streak and hopes to up grade the progress of their female counterparts under Wendy Kohler, who took fourth place in the girls basketball tournament.  They will face the fourth seeded Mankato East Cougars, in their 11th state tournament.  The Cougars have not lost since they were defeated by their Key City rivals, the Mankato West Scarlets on February 17.  Is this the tournament the Cardinals finally bring home a title trophy to the Lakes Area or will the Cougars wreck another title opportunity that also occurred with boys & girls hockey and girls basketball?

Now this matchup sounds familiar.  The two teams that battle for the Class A third place trophy in boys hockey, the Hermantown Hawks and the second seeded Orono Spartans switch from the ice to the court but with different personnel.  The Hawks in their fourth state tournament faced the Spartans on February 9 and lost 76-60.  Orono, in their fifth trip to state, has not lost a game since they got beat by the team they won against in the Section 6 final, the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights.  Can the Spartans stay hot and possibly face Totino-Grace for the Class AAA title?

Stewartville buses will be ready to head up Highway 52 for the second straight week as the Tiger make their maiden voyage to The Barn.  They hope to have the same success the girls team had and play for a state title. It won't be easy as the third seeded DeLaSalle Islander play in their 12th tournament in a row and 28th overall.  Coincidentally, the Islanders played in the same tournament as Totino-Grace but they did not face each other.  Is a possible championship meeting in the works?

Opening up the Class AA portion of Quarterfinal Wednesday is the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights who are back for the second straight year.  Their only loss this season has been to perennial power Rochester Lourdes.  They have coasted through the regular season against southern Minnesota schools and things get tougher for the Knights because they face the top seeded and defending Class AA champion Providence Academy Lions.  The Lions are loaded with young talent, led by freshman sensation Maddyn Greenway and sister Hope and Grace Counts.  They are the best all around team in this area and a power for years with plenty of underclass players.  It's going to be a not so warm welcome for the Knights but can they pull off the upset or will Providence Academy bring back a second title trophy to its Plymouth campus?

Wrapping up the Williams Arena portion of the day's festivities is the fifth seeded Minnehaha Academy Redhawks facing the fourth seeded New London-Spicer Wildcats.  They are two programs with a ton tourney experience.  Minnehaha Academy is playing in its 15th state tournament and New London-Spicer, under the veteran leadership of Mike Dreier is playing in their 20th.  Six of the Redhawks seven defeats have been to teams in this yea's field, including two to Providence Academy.  The Wildcats lone defeat was a one point loss to Crosby-Ironton.  This should be a great game to close the day?  A gsame you won't want to miss.

Next door at Maturi Pavilion is your first chance to see another outstanding freshman in Crosby-Ironton's Tori Oehrlein.  She broke the 2000 career point mark this season and has led the Rangers to their fifth state tournament and their first since 2008.  The Rangers have a tough task ahead in the second seeded Goodhue Wildcats, who make their ninth trip up Highway 52 to The Barn.  Goodhue has been a dominant team for years in Class A and due to realignment, they moved up to Class AA.  The Wildcats have won nine straight games since losing to Stewartville.  Can they make in 10 in a row?

Closing out the day is the team with the longest state tournament drought, the Perham Yellowjackets, playing in their first state tournament since 1991.  The euphoria of ending a long drought could end quick since they face the third seeded Albany Huskies who are playing in their 16th state tournament and have not lost since they were defeated by New London-Spicer 45-33 December 20.  Can Perham [pull the upset or will Albany possibly get a rematch with New London-Spicer is they meet in the Class AA final.

  4:00:   Hill-Murray vs. Alexandria (Seed 3)

                                    EXAMINING THE FIELD

The first game in Class AAA should be a dandy as two powerhouses coaches by men named Dan as the Marshall Tigers, led by Dan Westby face the top seeded Becker Bulldogs under the veteran leadership of Dan Baird.  The Tigers, in their 12th strip to Minneapolis, were the fourth seed in a very tough Section 2 and beat the top seeded Jordan Jaguars in the semifinals and the St. Peter Saints in the finals.  The top seeded Bulldogs, in their seventh trip to state and fifth in a row have gone 20-1 since losing to Class AA power Providence Academy.  Can the Bulldogs return to Saturday's finals after winning the Battle of the Dans?

Two private school rivals take the court in the third quarterfinal game as the DeLaSalle Islanders, in their 12th state tournament face the second seeded Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights, in their eighth state tournament.  The two teams met December 20 with the Red Knights victorious 80-67.  BSM is led by Olivia Olson, who committed to Michigan and could get the chance to play on The Barn's elevated floor against the Gophers in 2024. Can they make it two straight against the Islanders.

Forty Years Ago State Tourney TV's Golden Age Began

While 45TV carries all the championship round games of the 2023 Minnesota State High School Boys Hockey Tournament this week, HSGN goes back 40 years to what the author of this blog coined "The Golden Age of State Tourney Coverage."  From 1983 to 1991, WCCO-TV had the rights to carry the prestigious event and it was a great undertaking by the CBS station.

In 1982, WCCO-TV outbid KSTP-TV to carry the state hockey tournament for the next three years.  It would be the first time the station aired the tournament and the third in this market.  The first was WTCN (now KARE) when they were an independent station.  But in 1979, the station became an NBC affiliate, KSTP switched from NBC to ABC and KMSP would be an independent before becoming a Fox owned station.

Who would call the play-by-play for WCCO's tournament coverage?  It would not be Al Shaver, who did such an excellent job on every game during KSTP's run but he was employed by KSTP=AM, the North Stars flagship radio station so he was out.  Who would be in?  Station honchos brought in outside talent starting with Canadian sportscaster Don Chevrier.  He only lasted one season and would be replaced by another broadcaster from north of the border Chris Cuthbert.  Another voice who would be hired was Wisconsin Badgers hockey broadcaster Paul Braun, a Bird Island, MN native.  Other play-by-play voices over the station's nine year run were Doug McLeod and Ted Robinson.  Their on air sidekicks in the booth would be the veteran Lou Nanne, who began his career as a state tournament analyst in 1964 and still at it, handing Class AA games this year.  Also pitching in were former Gopher hockey coach Herb Brooks and WCCO radio afternoon drive personality Steve Cannon.

In the studio, Mark Rosen and Ralph Jon Fritz anchored the coverage while news and sports personnel such as Tony Parker, Tom Hanneman and Jim Gately also contributed.  It also took dozens of people behind the scenes to bring viewers the sights and sounds of all the action at the St. Paul Civic Center.

All of those elements added up to a great production that looked and sound more like a network broadcast.  Around 1986, the addition of electronic still photos made the production even better.

As for what went wrong, you can count on one hand the number of things with WCCO's state tournament coverage.  One was occasionally missing goals because they aired commercials.  The other was fans of the CBS prime time soaps Knots Landing, Dallas and Falcon Crest.  They were delayed to late night time periods due to hockey coverage.  Fans of the soaps would have to pour coffee to keep them awake after the games or set their VCR's to watch them later.  This was before streaming, folks.

What made WCCO's coverage also stand out were the between periods and games features.  For fans expecting the station to bring in stars from CBS' shows such as Charlene Tilton from Dallas or Tom Selleck from Magnum PI like KSTP did with Howard Cosell and Cheryl Tiegs, it wouldn't happen.

One memorable game that stood out from that era was the 1985 quarterfinal game between Bloomington Jefferson and Minnetonka.  The score was tied at three at the end of regulation time.  So the game went into overtime and another and another.  Nobody scored the game winning goal.  So what happened?  The game was suspended until 9 AM the next day in order for the Bemidji-Burnsville game to begin.  Fans of the long running game show The Price is Right did not flood WCCO with complaints because the game would end on Brock Rendell's goal 2:21 into the fourth overtime to give Jefferson the victory.

There's were many other outstanding games throughout WCCO's nine year run.  But it 1992, the state tournament became a two class affair and the station didn't want to preempt a fourth night of network programming so they lost the rights to KMSP, who aired the tournament as well as boys and girls basketball and The Prep Bowl football finals.  But for nine years, viewers were treated to what would be "The Golden Age of State Tourney Coverage."

Who's Left Standing in Class A Boys Basketball Sections

Here it is.  The final section preview of the winter sports season as well as who is left in some of the eight Class A sections.

Section 1 looks like four teams have a chance to head to Minneapolis as the top seeded goodhue wildcats, the second seeded Spring Grove Lions, winners of 24 straight games followed by the third seeded and defending state champion Hayfield Vikings and fourth seeded Lyle/Austin Pacelli.

Heading to Section 2, in the North Subsection, the top two seeds are the Sleepy Eye St. Mary's Saints and the BOLD Warriors.  It's a three team race in the South Subsection with top seeded United South Central, the second seeded Mankato Loyola Crusaders and third seeded Mountain Lake/Comfrey.

Section 3 is another tough section with the top three seeds in the North Subsection the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks, Lakeview and the Central MN Christian Bluejays.  It could be a four team race in the South Subsection with the top seeded Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights, the second seeded Southwest MN Christian Eagles, third seeded Westbrook-Walnut Grove and fourth seeded Murray County Central.  Could there be an All Christian School section final?

The top seed in Section 4 is the New Life Academy Eagles.  But there are three other schools who have a shot at their first trip to Minneapolis.  They are second seeded Legacy Christian, third seeded Liberty Classical Academy and fourth seeded Metro Schools College Prep.  Is history in the making in this section?

The top seed in the Section 5 East subsection, the Barnum Bombers ended their season on a six game losing streak and hope to get back on track but second seeded East Central and third seeded Kaleidoscope Charter could keep the Barnum fan buses from heading down I-35.  The top seed in the West Subsection is Nevis.  But look out for second seeded Pine River-Backus and third seeded Browerville-Eagle Valley.

It will be a battle in the Section 6 North Subsection between the top seeded Henning Hornets and the second seeded Battle Lake Battlers.  A bigger battle is in the South Subsection is between top seeded Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, second seeded Border West and third seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.

Another puzzling section is Section 7, as top seeded Deer River ended the regular season on an 11 game winning streak.  Second seeded Cherry has an outstanding junior who committed to the Gophers, Isaac Asuna, followed by third seeded Northland and fourth seeded Mountain Iron-Buhl.  Who will make the trip to The Barn?

The last section is Section 8 with a couple of top teams in the East Subsection, the top seeded Fosston Greyhounds and the second seeded Cass Lake-Bena Panthers.  The West Subsection is a three team race between top seeded Sacred Heart, second seeded Warren-Alvarado-Oslo and third seeded Northern Freeze.  Outstanding basketball action up north.

Blogger's Note:  Information used in basketball and hockey section previews came from minnesota-scores.net and mshsl.org.  Other material came from the blogger's memory.

Who's Left in Class AA Boys Basketball Sections?

Some sections are underway in Class AA boys basketball and some have yet to start.  Here's what's happening in the eight Class AA sections.

The top four teams are still alive in Section 1.  They are the top seeded Lake City Tigers, who have lost only to Stewartville in the regular season, followed by the second seeded Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs, the third seeded Caledonia Warriors and the fourth seeded Cannon Falls Bombers.

Section 2 has not yet begun but in the North Subsection, it could be a three team race with the top seeded Norwood-Young America Raiders, the second seeded Belle Plaine Tigers and the third seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers, winners on 17 straight games.  The South Subsection could be a two team race with the top seeded Maple River Eagles and second seeded Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.  QWho will head up Highway 169 to The Barn?  A great section to watch.

The North Subsection in Section 3 has three teams that could make it to the finals.  They are top seeded Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta, the second seeded Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles and the third seeded Paynesville Area Bulldogs.  As for the South Subsection, the top seed is the Jackson County Central Huskies.

Section 4 begins this week and once again, the Minnehaha Academy Redhawks are the top seed.  But two other academies could pose a threat to the Redhawks section dominance, the second seeded Concordia Academy Beacons and the third seeded St. Paul Academy Spartans.  Can Minnehaha Academy continue their run of section titles?

If there's one section in Class AA that is very tough, it's Section 5.  The top seed has been the top ranked team in Class AA most of the season, the Holy Family Catholic Fire.  Looking to put out the fFre's chances of heading to The Barn are the second seeded Minneapolis North Polars and the third seeded Maranatha Christian Academy Mustangs.  But wait, there are some other teams that could contend, including three with identical 18-8 records, the fourth seeded Minneapolis Edison Tommies, the fifth seeded Watertown-Mayer Royals and the sixth seeded Breck Mustangs.  Add the seventh seeded Hiawatha Academy Wolves and the eighth seeded Dassel-Cokato Chargers.  Who will emerge as the team that will hoist the title trophy on St. Patrick's Day?

Another tough section is Section 6.  You have the top seeded Albany Huskies who have won 22 games in a row, followed by the second seeded Mora Mustangs, the third seeded Milaca Wolves and the fourth seeded Sauk Centre Mainstreeters who haven't been to state since 1998.  Some outstanding basketball to come in central Minnesota.

Up north in Section 7, it's a five team race as the top seeded Pequot Lakes Patriots, the second seeded Esko Eskomos, the third seeded Rock Ridge Wolverines, the fourth seeded Crosby-Ironton Rangers and the fifth seeded Two Harbors Agates.  The last time Two Harbors played in the state tournament was the first year of two class play 1971.  Who will come out of this section?

Finally, in Section 8, Thief River Falls is best known for hockey but their boys basketball team is the top seed and hopng to head to Minneapolis for the first time since 1974.  They will have to get past the second seeded Perham Yellowjackets and the third seeded Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels.

2023 Class AAA Boys Basketball Section Preview

Eight Class AAAA sections have been examined and here's a preview of the eight Class AAA sections.

What a season for basketball in Stewartville.  The girls team is a win away from heading to Minneapolis and the Trojan boys are the top seed in Section 1.  They are three wins away from their first trip up Highway 52 to state but can they hold off the second seeded Austin Packers?

It's a two team race in Section 2 with the top seeded Mankato East Cougars looking to get back to the tournament and the second seeded New Ulm Eagles trying to head to the first state tournament since 1975.  Will they break the drought or will the Cougars ground the Eagles?

A perennial power is the top seed in Section 3, the DeLaSalle Islanders.  Their trip across the Hennepin Ave. Bridge could be derailed by the red hot second seed the St. Thomas Academy Cadets.  The Cadets have not lost a game since they were blown out by Mahtomedi on January 10.  However, the third seeded South St. Paul Packers could end a tournament drought that's lasted since the end of the once class tournament in 1970.

In Section 4, the defending Class AAA champion Totino-Grace Eagles need to get past the second seeded Mahtomedi Zephyrs, who enter section play on an eight game winning streak.  Hoping to return to state for the first time since 2015 is the third seeded St. Paul Johnson Governors.

The Princeton Tigers are the top seed in Section 5, having won 11 of their last 13 games.  Can they hold of the sting of the second seeded Big Lake Hornets?

To Section 6 where the top seeded Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights have a very athletic team.  But in their path is the second seeded Orono Spartans who are on an 11 game winning streak and the third seeded Delano Tigers.  BSM and Orono split their season series.  Who will win the rubber game if they meet in the section final?

While the boys hockey team is battling for their second straight Class A title, the Hermantown Hawks boys basketball team is the top seed in Section 7.  They enter section play on a five game winning streak but can they get past the second seeded North Branch Vikings and the third seeded Duluth Denfeld Hunters?

Get ready to make your hotel reservations Cardinal fans, Alexandria is the top seed in Section 8 and could make its fourth trip down I-94 if the boys basketball team can survive the second seeded St. Cloud Tech Tigers and the third seeded Detroit Lakes Lakers.  Both Cardinal hockey teams have qualified for the state tournament and the girls basketball team led by veteran coach Wendy Kohler is one win away from heading to The Barn.  Can the boys be next?

Next"  The eight Class AA sections.

2023 Class AAAA Boys Basketball Section Preview

As girls basketball heads into section final action the boys begin their Road to The Barn.  Here's a preview of the eight Class AAAA sections.

The top seed in Section 1 is the Lakeville North Panthers who have gone 16-1 since an overtime loss to the Eastview Lightning January 10.  Can they get past the second seeded Farmington Tigers who enter sections on a five game winning streak?

It's been a great winter sports season for Minnetonka as both the boys and girls hockey teams advanced to the state tournament.  Now it's the boys basketball team's turn to hold a top seed in Section 2.  They swept the second seeded Edina Hornets in the regular season.  Is a third meeting possible in the section final?

The top two seeds in Section 3 come from the South Suburban Conference, the Eastview Lightning and the Eagan Wildcats.  The Wildcats look to end a four game losing streak.  Don't count out the third seeded Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars, led by one of the state's top juniors Dan Freitag.

Over in Section 4, the top seeded East Ridge Raptors could head to state for the first time since 2019.  But a couple of their Suburban East Conference foes could keep the Raptor fan buses from heading down I-94.  They are the second seeded White Bear Lake Bears and the third seeded Stillwater Ponies.  Who will win, place and show in the section?

The top seed in Section 5 is the defending Class AAAA champion Park Center Pirates.  The Pirates hope to bounce back after losing their regular season finale to the second seeded Maple Grove Crimson.  Can the Pirates steer their ship into a section final rematch with the Crimson?

Section 6's top seed the Wayzata Trojans lost in last years Class AAAA final to Park Center and look to return to The Barn.  They swept the season series with their Lake Conference rival, the second seeded Hopkins Royals.  But there a couple of teams that could spoil the Lake's dominance, the third seeded Cooper Hawks and the fourth seeded Minneapolis Southwest Lakers.  It has the makings of a great section.

Heading to Section 7 where the top two seeds have identical 19-7 records, the Andover Huskies and the Duluth East Greyhounds.  Also in the mix is the third seeded Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets.

Section 8 could be a three team race with the top seeded Buffalo Bison, the second seeded Moorhead Spuds and the third seeded Brainerd Warriors.  The Bison's only section defeat was to the Warriors.  Is a rematch possible for a state tournament berth?

Next the eight Class AAA sections.

                                        EXAMINING THE FIELD

Get ready for a packed house as the Class AA teams take their turn in the X spotlight.  First up is the Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders facing the second seeded Maple Grove Crimson.  CDH is in their fifth state tournament and second straight as they beat the top seeded St. Thomas Academy Cadets in the Section 3 final.  They will face last year's Class AA runner up, the second seeded Maple Grove Crimson, playing in their sixth state tournament.  The Crimson, seeded second in Section 5, routed the Rogers Royals 7-3 in the Section 5 final.  Is another Championship Saturday in the works for Maple Grove?

Wrapping up the afternoon session will be the Moorhead Spuds, playing in their 20th and fifth consecutive state tournament.  They have never taken home the championship trophy and if they can still be in the race for the title they will have to get past the third seeded Edina Hornets, in their 35th state tournament.  The Hornets earned the trip to St. Paul with a victory over the top seeded Wayzata Trojans in the Section 6 final.  You can bet it will look like St. Patrick's Day with many green clad fans in the green seats.

Opening the evening session will be another team with the wearing of the green as the Hill-Murray Pioneers, playing in their 33rd state tournament and fourth straight face the top seeded Minnetonka Skippers, in their seventh trip to state.  Bill Lechner's bunch battled illnesses and injuries as well as a three game losing streak to close out the regular season.  The Skippers, the second Lake Conference team in the Class AA field ended the Chanhassen Storm's hopes of their first trip to state with a double overtime win in the Section 2 final.  Minnetonka shutout Edina twice in the regular season.  Could there be a third meeting in the section final?

Quarterfinal Thursday closes as the fifth seeded Lakeville South Cougars, in their eighth state tournament battle the fourth seeded and defending state Class AA champion Andover Huskies.  Lakeville South has won nine of their last 10 games.  The Huskies are playing in their fourth consecutive state tournament and have gone 17-2 since the calendar changed from 2022 to 2023.

A caveat:  If you don't have tickets for the Class AA tournament, it's sold out.  To quote Ed Norton in the classic sitcom The Honeymooners, tickets "are scarcer than hen's teeth."  The entire tournament, except for consolation and third place games will air on 45TV and at kstp.com

2023 Class AA Hockey State Tournament Preview

2023 MINNESOTA STATE CLASS A BOYS HOCKEY TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINAL SCHEDULE
(Games played Wednesday, Mary 8 at Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul)

11:00:  Luverne vs. Hermantown (Seed 2)
1:00:    Alexandria vs. Mahtomedi (Seed 3)
6:00:    St. Cloud Cathedral vs. Warroad (Seed 1)
8:00:    Northfield (Seed 5) vs. Orono (Seed 4)

                                     EXAMINING THE FIELD
It will be a North vs. South battle to open the State Boys Hockey Tournament as the Luverne Cardinals face the second seeded and defending Class A champion Hermantown Hawks.  The Cardinals are playing in their third tournament and first since 2017 and will play their first game against a northern Minnesota school.  Luverne enters state tournament play on an 11 game winning streak but they have a very difficult task in the defending Class A champion Hawks, who are playing in their 19th state tournament.  They outscored their section opponents 21-4.  One of their two losses was to the Warroad Warriors.  Is a rematch possible in Saturday's Class A final?

Another flock of Cardinal fans will enter the X as the afternoon session concludes with the Alexandria Cardinals and the third seeded Mahtomedi Zephyrs.  The Cardinals, in their seventh trip to state are red hot and on a six game winning streak as they face the Zephyrs who are playing in their 14th state tournament and have bounced back after a four game losing streak to win their last nine games.  Can they make it 10?

Opening up the evening session will be the perennial Granite City power the St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders, in their 11th state tournament and the top seeded Warroad Warriors.  The Crusaders overcame an 0-3 start that included a 4-0 season opening shutout against the Warriors to go 13-9 the rest of the way.  Warroad, playing in its 23rd state tournament is unbeaten, including a 1-1 tie against Sartell-St. Stephen.  Two weeks ago, their female counterparts brought home a state championship trophy.  Can the boys duplicate the feat bring another celebration to the sit of next year's Hockey Day Minnesota?

Wrapping up the day's festivities will be the fifth seeded Northfield Raiders and the fourth seeded Orono Spartans.  The Raiders head up Highway 3 for the first time since 2017 and enter tournament play on a six game winning streak.  They face Orono, playing in their 10th state tournament and in the hunt for their first Class A title since 2018.  Will the Raiders advance toward a showdown with Warroad or will Orono battle for a chance to take home the title trophy down Highway 12 Saturday afternoon?

Class A Girls Basketball Section Update

Section play is underway in Class A with some sections down to the Final Four.

Section 1 has three of the four remaining teams with 20+ wins.  They are the top seeded Hayfield Vikings, the second seeded Grand Meadow Superlarks and the third seeded Randolph Rockets.  The fourth seeded team and the only one with less than 20 wins is the Lanesboro Burros.

Over in Section 2, it's the top seeded Mayer Lutheran Crusaders battling the BOLD Warriors in the North subsection and in the South subsection it will be The Battle of Sleepy Eye as the Sleepy Eye Indians face the Sleepy Eye St. Mary's Saints.  It's likely the town will be empty that night as fans head to St. Peter for this section showdown.

In Section 3, the North subsection features the top seeded Lac Qui Parle Valley Eagles, winners of 13 straight games against the perennial power Minneota Vikings.  But in the South subsection, it's an All Edgerton final as the Edgerton Dutchman face the SW MN Eagles.  Is an All Eagles final in the works?

Section 4 has just started and the top seeded Heritage Christian Eagles and the second seeded United Christian Academy Thunder could meet in the finals of a wide open section.

A good place to give the hyphen key a workout is the West Subsection in Section 5.  There's Pine River-Backus facing top seeded Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa followed by Walker-Hackensack-Akeley vs. Nevis.  No hyphens in the East subsections as the Ogilvie Lions face the Barnum Bombers and the Upsala-Swanville Patriots battle the top seeded Braham Bombers.  Will the subsection final be The Battle of the Bombers?

To Section 6 as the top four seeds are still alive in the North subsection as the fourth seeded New York Mills Eagles face the top seeded Underwood Rockets and the Breckenridge Cowboys face the Henning Hornets.  It's Hyphen City in the East Subsection as the top seeded and defending Class A champion Hancock Owls face Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley and Wheaton/Herman-Norcross faces Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunberg.

It's been a great year for head coach Jeff Buffetta and the top seeded Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers as the look toward returning to Minneapolis.  But there seems to be a logjam of outstanding teams that include the section seeded Cromwell-Wright Cardinals, the third seeded Ely Timberwolves and the fourth seeded South Ridge Panthers.  Add the fifth seeded Chisholm Bluestreaks and it shows the Iron Range is loaded with top girls basketball talent.

Finally, in Section 8, the East subsection has top seeded Kelliher/Northome, the second seeded Fossdton Greyhounds and the third seeded Fertile-Beltrami Falcons.  The West subsection top seed is Badger/Greenbush-Middle River.

Plenty of outstanding girls basketball section play ccoming up.

Over in Section 2, the North Bracket has the top seeded Southwest Christian Stars, the second seeded Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers, the third seeded Norwood-Young America Raiders and the fourth seeded Belle Plaine Tigers.  The top four seeds still remain in the South Bracket.  Red hot Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial is going for their 20th straight win and they will have to get past the second seeded Waseca Bluejays, third seeded NRHEG and the fourth seeded Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers.

Four teams remain in Section 3 as the top seeded New London-Spicer Wildcats battle the Montevideo Thunderhawks in the North Subsection finals and in the South Subsection final, it will be a Battle of the Cardinals as Fairmont, who upset Pipestone will face Luverne.

It could be a three team race in Section 4 as the top seeded St. Croix Lutheran Crusaders, the second seeded Minnehaha Academy Redhawks and the third seeded Minneapolis Roosevelt Teddies lead a tough field.  Could this be the year the Teddies make their first trip to The Barn?

In Section 5, the top seeded Providence Academy Lions are the heavy favorites to return to state but the second seeded Maranatha Christian Academy Mustangs and the third seeded Holy Family Catholic Fire look to keep the Lions in their cages.

Section 6 has the makings of a tough section as the top seeded Albany Huskies enter section play on a 19 game winning streak.  Look out for the second seeded Sauk Centre Mainstreeters, the third seeded Holdingford Tigers and the fourth seeded Pine city Dragons.  don't count out the fifth seeded Kimball Area Cubs.

Heading north to Section 7, It's a four team race that included the top seeded Pequot Lakes Patriota, the second seeded Proctor Rails, the third seeded Crosby-Ironton Rangers with nine straight wins and the fourth seeded Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers.

Finally in Section 8, there are three teams with at least 20 wins.  They are the top seeded Perham Yellowjackets, the second seeded Thief River Falls Prowlers and the third seeded Pelican Rapids Vikings.

Who's left in Class A?  That's in the next post.
