SLP Orioles Pound Eden Prairie Eagles

It was a chill Saturday afternoon in St. Louis Park but the Oriole boys soccer team heated up the net with four different players scoring to shut out the Eden Prairie Eagles 4-0.

The Orioles scored their lone goal of the first half on s right side shot from Sam Diamond that entered the net.  St. Louis Park led 1-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Orioles sent the Eagles back down Highway 169 with three unanswered goals.  Sam Gage would score off a corner kick to put St. Louis Park ahead by two.  The margin would increase to three 1:13 later on Thomas Salamzadeh's liner that went past Eden Prairie goalkeeper Ben Urban.  The Orioles showed that they had no stars when a fourth player would send the ball to the net and it would be David Benjamin's center slot goal with 12:38 remaining in the game.

Eagles head coach Rob St. Clair told HSGN on how long time head coach Vince Thomas, who retired after 36 years leading Eden Prairie was influential to him.

"What he was like as a teacher as a man as a person.  He treats everyone with respect."

St. Louis Park improved their record to 11-0-1 and travels to Chanhassen on Thursday, October 4 to take on the Storm at 5 PM.  Eden Prairie fell to 1-6-2 and lost their third straight game and fourth in their last five.  They will be back in action on Monday, October 1 against the Edina Hornets at Kuhlman Stadium at 5 PM.  The game was rescheduled from September 20 due to the torrential rains that soaked the Twin Cities area.

Farmington Tigers Win Historic First High School Game at TCO Stadium

History was made Friday night in Eagan as Zac Janz scored three touchdowns to lead the Farmington Tigers to a 41-28 win over the Eagan Wildcats in the first high school football game at TCO Stadium.

The 6,255 fans who populated the new training camp home of the Minnesota Vikings got to see both teams reach the end zone in the first quarter.  The Tigers capitalized on an interception by Luke Weierke that began their drive at the Wildcat 20 yard line and Janz would score on a five yard touchdown run.  Eagan would even the score at seven on Max Meekin's 56 yard run down the right side.

Farmington would forge ahead in the second quarter with four touchdowns.  Sophomore quarterback Alex Berreth completed a 42 yard pass to Alijah Moe and then Berreth scored on a one yard run. Janz would score his second touchdown on a one yard run that followed a 24 yard completion to Eli Green.  The combination of Berreth to Moe would factor into the third touchdown as Berreth went deep to Moe for 66 yards.  Moe would also haul in an 18 yard score and the Tigers led at halftime 33-7.

Going into the second half, the Wildcats began the opening drive at their own 22 yard line and got a solid ground game from Carter Lyons that would culminate in a one yard touchdown run from Cole Gibson.  But Eagan was not done yet.  They would reach the end zone a second time as Max Meekin would scamper down the green turf 63 yards to cut the Farmington lead to 33-21.

Could the Wildcats complete a monumental comeback in the fourth quarter?  They would cut the deficit to five as Cole Sackmaster mastered the art of the interception with a 33 yard touchdown.  But the comeback would be aborted as a fumbled pitch by quarterback Ethan Gugino was recovered by the Tigers Kyle Newham and the ball would be spotted at the Eagan 13 yard line.  Following a Wildcat penalty, Janz would reach the end zone on a two yard run, his third touchdown of the night.

Both teams return to action on Friday, October 5 at 7 PM.  Farmington improved their record to 1-4 and heads up I-35 to Burnsville to take on the Blaze.  Eagan fell to 0-5 and hosts the Prior Lake Lakers.

Dave Giles, a familiar voice to state tournament fans was the public address announcer for the inaugural TCO Stadium high school game.  "It's an honor.  An absolute honor," said the voice for many Eagan athletic events throughout the school year.

HSGN interviewed a couple of fans at halftime to get their views on the historic game.  First up was Eric Sunden of Farmington.  "A lot of fun.  Great stadium.  Hats off to the Vikings for doing this for the kids."
Also interviewed was Brent DeNoma of Eagan.  "It's an outstanding venue.  A very special night for the kids."

Football Battle of St. Louis Park Preview

The "Battle of St. Louis Park" heads to the gridiron Friday night as the St. Louis Park Orioles travel to  Benilde-St. Margaret's for a 7 PM Homecoming game against the Red Knights.

Both teams head into the game with identical 2-2 records.  The Orioles played their annual Homecoming game last Friday and routed the Richfield Spartans 41-14.  Quarterback Aaron Ellingson was a factor in St. Louis Park's victory, throwing two touchdown passes and scoring on a 77 yard keeper run.  One of the recipients of Ellingson's touchdown passes was tight end Ben Thyne.  He's part of an outstanding group of receivers that includes Akili Farris, Cole Ewald and McCabe Dvorak.  In the backfield is Sajid Nathim, who has 320 rushing yards, three behind Ellingson.  St. Louis Park's defense, anchored by Jariel Lopez-Barrera and Adam Bauer has a tough task ahead in order to beat BMS.  They will need to slow down BSM's top running back Isaiah Smith.

Looking at the Red Knights, Smith had an outstanding game last Friday against the Chanhassen Storm as BSM came up short 36-33.  Jacob Miller's touchdown pass with :13 left to Cade Plath clinched the win for the Storm.  The Red Knights took the lead with Will Petty's 14 yard run with 1:29 to go.  But the big story for BSM was Smith who ran for 178 yards and reached the end zone twice on runs of 53 and 70 yards.  it was his second consecutive game of more than 100 rushing yards.  On September 14, he ran for 160 yards and a touchdown as the Red Knights demolished the DeLaSalle Islanders 47-7.  John Whitmore was the bright spot on defense for the Red Knights with 18 total tackles.  The key for BSM is a strong running game from Smith and the defense has to force turnovers.

If you plan on coming to the game, please arrive early.  The main parking lot could be full well before game time but there is plenty of parking across the street at Beth El Synagogue.  It should be an interesting game amid the vehicles cruising down the Highway 100 frontage road that's close to BSM.

SLP Oriole Soccer Teams Split With BSM Red Knights

The weather was getting chilly Tuesday night but there was plenty of hot soccer action as the St. Louis Park Oriole soccer teams hosted the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights with the boys routing the Red Knights 6-1 and the BSM girls shutting out the Orioles on a late goal 1-0.

First up was the boys game where Randy Mayele and Nick Riley scored two goals apiece to bolster a five goal second half that led the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 6-1 win over the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights.

Both teams would tally in the first half.  The Orioles would strike first when Zinedine Kroeten was fouled on a hand ball and awarded a penalty kick.  He put the ball into the net.  It would be a tie game on Harrison Shibley's shot that rolled down the right side of the net and entered the goal.  Shibley was the only Red Knight senior in uniform due to injuries to Will Driessen and Thomas Forby.  His goal evened the score at one at halftime.

St. Louis Park, which has given up only two goals since August 29, would break the game open with five second half goals.  The first three came in a span of :58.  Mayele rebounded Isaak Kimmel's shot for the first goal.  Riley would score from the right side :21 later and Ben Klepfer, who was moved to goalkeeper in the first half due to a nosebleed suffered by regular goalkeeper Leo Finley, returned to the Oriole offensive attack, passed to Mayele and he scored his second goal.  Though BSM played strong defense on St. Louis Park, they were victimized by an own goal that would be awarded to Riley and Klepfer would wrap up the scoring with a goal from the center slot.

The Orioles improved their record to 9-0-1 and travel to Richfield on Thursday, September 27 for a 7 PM game with the Spartans.  The Red Knights fell to 4-7-1 and will also be in action on the 27th as they host the Cooper Hawks at 7 PM.

On to the girls game and there would only be one goal.  It would come from Stella Fortier with 6:34 left in regulation time to lead the BSM Red Knights to a 1-0 win over the St. Louis Park Orioles.

Neither team would send the ball to the net in the first half and it looked like it would be a scoreless tie heading into the two five minute overtime periods.  No so on this chilly Tuesday night as Stella Fortier's shot would head for the net with 6:34 left to play.  As the orange lit seconds ticked down on the scoreboard, the Orioles had a chance to send the game into overtime but Dare Kroeten's shot bounced off the crossbar and that's how the game ended.

BSM Improved their record to 7-4-1 and hosts the Cooper Hawks on the 27th at 5 PM.  St. Louis Park ended a six game unbeaten streak and fell to 4-4-2.  They will also be in action on the 27th, heading to Richfield to rake on the Spartans at 5 PM.

Big Week Ahead for SLP Oriole Soccer Teams

The St. Louis Park Oriole soccer teams have been on a roll and the boys and girls teams head into the next to last week of the regular season.

The boys have been very solid so far, with a record of 8-0-1 and have only given up one goal since August 29.  In their last six games, the Orioles have outscored their opponents 22-1. The key has been outstanding passing, ball control and team oriented play.   They open up the week on Tuesday, September 25 against their city rival the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights.  The Red Knights, under the veteran leadership of Dave Platt, hasn't had a lot of shining armor this season.  BSM has been shutout five times in their last seven games and picked up a win in their last game against the Richfield Spartans on September 17 3-1.

And speaking of the Spartans, that's St. Louis Park's next opponent on Thursday, September 27.  Richfield's season has been rather dismal, going into the week's games with a 2-8-1 record.  The boys will wrap up the week on Saturday, September 29 with a noon game at home against the Eden Prairie Eagles.  The Eagles have a new head coach in Rob St. Clair, who replaced Vince Thomas who retired after 36 years leading Eden Prairie and head into the week with a 1-4-2 record.  Looking for something to do during the Gopher football team's bye week?  Head over to St. Louis Park for a good boys soccer match up.

Since they started the season 0-3, the Oriole girls has an unbeaten streak in six games, including the last three won by identical 2-0 scores.  They go up against BSM which returns to the Twin Cities after a trip up I-35 last Saturday to Esko and beat the Eskomos 2-1.  The Red Knights have another outstanding team under Scott Helling-Christy and they beat a pair of top teams in Section 5A early this season Blake and DeLaSalle.  St. Louis Park will also be in action on the 27th against the Richfield Spartans who are on a five game losing streak since they beat the North Branch Vikings 3-2.

It should be an interesting week of soccer for both St. Louis Park teams.

SLP Orioles Roll Over Richfield Spartans

The bleachers at the St. Louis Park High School stadium were packed Friday night for the annual Homecoming football game and it turned out to be a happy one for the numerous orange and black clad fans in attendance who saw Aaron Ellingson throw two touchdown passes and run one in to lead the host Orioles to a 41-14 rout of the Richfield Spartans.

The Orioles would get the ball following a Spartans punt and they would score on their second play from scrimmage as Ellingson threw a 28 pass to Akili Farris to put St. Louis Park ahead 7-0.  Richfield would lose defensive back Mitchell January to an ankle injury.  He is the brother of former state track and field champion Jessica January.

Ellingson would be the exalted leader on offense for the Orioles in the second quarter as he would be the factor in both touchdowns.  The first would come after Sajid Nathim's touchdown was called back due to a 10 yard holding penalty and on the next play, Ellingson threw a 19 yard touchdown pass to tight end Sam Thyne and the lead increased to 14.  The junior quarterback would keep the ball and he headed down field like he was headed to the nearby Holiday station and scored on a 77 yard run that extended the St. Louis Park lead to 21.  But there would be no shutout on this chilly Friday night as Richfield would wrap up the first half scoring on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Miles to Donovan Erickson Lange and the Orioles lead at the half 21-7.

Both teams would reach the end zone in the third quarter.  The Orioles would strike first as Nathim would score on a 21 yard run.  The Spartans would convert on a fourth down and three play when Jacob Kateley ran stately down the field and hauled in a 59 yard touchdown pass from Miles to cut St. Louis Park's lead to 28-14.

Farris would show his versatility in the fourth quarter as he also played in the backfield.  He took a hand off from Ellingson and ran 35 yard to the Spartan three yard line and he would reach the end zone on the next play.  Penalties and turnovers would plague Richfield and St. Louis Park would capitalize on a turnover as McCabe Dvorak intercepted a Miles pass and ran the ball for a touchdown to wrap up the scoring.  With the outcome decided, both teams went to their reserve quarterbacks.  Will Dvorak replaced Ellingson for the Orioles and Spartan head coach Kris Pulford put in Max O'Connell and took out Miles.

St. Louis Park evened their record at 2-2 and begins a two game road trip on Friday, September 28 when they head to Benilde-St. Margaret's to face the Red Knights at 7 PM.  Richfield fell to 0-4 and will host the Holy Angels Stars on Saturday, September 29 at 1 PM.

Earlier in the day, the St. Louis Park soccer teams faced the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars in a doubleheader that was rescheduled from Thursday due to the heavy rains that pelted the Twin Cities.  The boys recorded their fifth shutout in six games with a 1-0 win over the Jaguars and the girls blanked Jefferson 2-0.  It was also the St. Louis Park girls third consecutive 2-0 win.

It's Homecoming for SLP Orioles as They Host Richfield Spartans

This week is Homecoming Week at St. Louis Park High School and the Oriole football team returns to their home stadium Friday night to host the Richfield Spartans at 7 PM.

Last week, St. Louis Park traveled to Richfield to face the defending Class AAAA champions, the top ranked Holy Angels Stars.  It was a big night for the Stars Thomas Shelstad, who scored two touchdowns with one of them a 97 yard run to beat the Orioles 28-7.  There was a bright spot for St. Louis Park as Sajid Nathim had the lone touchdown on a five yard run to avert the Holy Angels shutout.  He will need to have a good game as the Orioles try to end a two game losing streak.  The defense will also need to shut down the Spartan offense which almost got their first win of the season on September 7 against the Park Center Pirates but Emmanuel Tamba rushed for 268 yards and scored four touchdowns to beat Richfield 41-39.

So far, it's been a tough start for the Spartans as they head into the game with an 0-3 record.  It doesn't get easier the next three weeks as Richfield will battle the Holy Angels Stars, Cooper Hawks and the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights.  The Spartans quarterback is Ryan Miles, who has thrown two touchdown passes but has thrown four interceptions.  One of the Richfield touchdowns was scored by Demetrius Coleman, who also plays defense and leads the Spartans with 13 tackles.  He will have to have a stellar game against Oriole quarterback Aaron Ellingson.

The good news is that there is no rain in the forecast.  Get there early.  The stadium will be packed for Homecoming Football action.

SLP Orioles Sweep Bloomington Kennedy Eagles

Though there was torrential rain late Monday afternoon, the weather cleared up in St. Louis Park for a Metro West Conference doubleheader as the Orioles hosted the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles with the boys winning 4-1 and the girls recording a 2-0 shutout.

Umbrellas were out in the St. Louis Park stadium bleachers as the boys game opened with wet weather and closed with two consecutive goals from David Benjamin that led the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 4-1 win over the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles.

The Orioles came into the game with an unanswered goal streak at 17 but it would come to an end on Diego Perez's rebound goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  However, the lead would be short lived as Randy Mayele would score from the left side to tie the game at one to end the first half scoring.

St. Louis Park would put the game away in the second half with three straight goals.  Mayele would assist on two of them.  He would center the ball to Nikolas Pantazides in the center slot and he would put the Orioles ahead 2-1.  On the second goal, Mayele had another good centering pass, this time to Benjamin and he would tally with 13:00 remaining.  Benjamin would score his second goal off a pass from Thomas Salamzadeh and that would end the scoring.

The Orioles extended their winning streak to seven games and improve their record to 7-0-1.  They return to action on Thursday, September 20 against the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars at 7 PM at Bloomington Stadium.  The Eagles ended a two game winning streak and fell to 4-4-1.  They will also be in action on the 20th as they head up to New Hope to face the Cooper Hawks at 7 PM.

On to the girls game as the Orioles broke a scoreless tie with two second half goals to beat the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles 2-0.

Neither team would erase the zeros from the scoreboard in the first half.  In the second half, the Orioles took the lead as Anna Jennisen sent the ball up field and in went off Alma Beaton and into the net.  St. Louis Park suffered a blow in the second half when freshman goalkeeper Sophia Romero left the game due to an injury.  She would be replaced in the net by Zio Leon Vega.  Vega would make her presence known with a couple of key save that would keep the Orioles ahead.  They would add an insurance goal after Kennedy goalkeeper Madeline Hergott blocked Aliviah McClinton's shot and as Hergott was playing far out of the net, McClinton dribbled the ball toward the left side of the goal and found the opening to put the ball in the net.

Both teams will be back in action on the 20th.  The Orioles improved their record to 4-3-2 and will play at Bloomington Jefferson at 4:45 PM.  The Eagles fell to 1-3-3 and will also head for New Hope to face the Cooper Hawks at 5 PM.

Between games, the 2018 St. Louis Park Homecoming court was presented with Daniel Cummins named king sand Jayda Witherspoon queen.

A Hot Saturday for SLP Oriole Soccer

The temperature was close to 90 degrees Saturday afternoon but it didn't cool off the host St. Louis Park Orioles soccer teams as both the boys and girls recorded shutouts.  The boys blanked the New Prague Trojans  6-0 and the girls used a solid first half to shut down the Watertown-Mayer Royals 2-0.

The boys game was first as Randy Mayele scored two goals to lead the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 6-0 win over the New Prague Trojans.

Mayele began the scoring for the Orioles as he drove downfield and the ball bounced into the net.  Freshman Nicholas Kent, playing his first varsity game of the season proved himself after he got a pass from Alex Ruiz-Shimada and put St. Louis Park ahead by two.

Outstanding passing was also the key to the Orioles win and it showed on the third goal when Nick Riley found Zinedine Kroeten on the left side of Trojan goalkeeper Kade Eggum and he found an opening and put the ball in.  St. Louis Park concluded the first half scoring as Lioul Minas received a pass from Ruiz-Shimada and he would also score his first varsity goal to give the Orioles a 4-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Mayele, a junior forward would use his speed to dribble the ball through the center slot and score his second goal. Two more roster additions would factor into the Orioles scoring.  Jovan Dennison would feed Bennett Kouame and he would put St. Louis Park by six to conclude the scoring.

The Orioles recorded their sixth straight win and improve their record to 6-0-1 and have scored 17 consecutive unanswered goals.  They will return to action on Monday, September 17 at 5 PM as they host the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles.  The Trojans, coached by St. Louis Park graduate Gospel Kordah, fell to 4-5-1.  They will travel to Rockford on Thursday, September 20 for a 5 PM game against the Rockets.

Now to the girls game as Alma Beaton scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 2-0 win over the Watertown-Mayer Royals.

The game was rescheduled from August 27 due to inclement weather.

Beaton would assist on the first goal as she made a left side pass to Ellie Kent and she put the Orioles ahead.  The St. Louis Park freshman would clinch the win when her shot was saved by Royal goalkeeper Sage Heitz and Claire Bargman scored on a rebound.  Neither team would score in the second half as the Orioles used their bench to put the reserves into the game on this hot Saturday.

St. Louis Park improved their record to 2-3-2 and will also be in action on the 17th as they host the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles at 7 PM.  Watertown-Mayer fell to 5-3 and hosts the Mound-Westonka Whitehawks on Thursday, September 20 at 7 PM

SLP Orioles-Holy Angels Stars Football Preview

The football schedule gets even tougher for the St. Louis Park Orioles when they head to Richfield Friday night to take on the top ranked team in Class AAAA and the defending state champion Holy Angels Stars.

Last Friday, the Orioles opened their home season against the Cooper Hawks in a rematch of last year's section final and it wasn't even close than the 13-12 win last November thanks to Nascier Borden's three touchdowns that led the Hawks to a 42-14 win over the Orioles.

There was a bright spot for St. Louis Park as junior running back Sajid Nathim had two one yard touchdown runs in the fourth quarter.  The Orioles will need to have a good game from Nathim and quarterback Aaron Ellingson needs tto spread the ball around to his receiving corps that includes Akili Farris and Cole Ewald.  The defense will have to have a stellar game against a Stars offense that has averaged 31 points in two games.  The defensive highlight last week for the Orioles was a fumble recovery by Aaron Sledge. He will need to force turnovers by Holy Angels.

Last season, the Stars took home their first Class AAAA title trophy with a win over the Cloquet Lumberjacks in the Prep Bowl.  So far, Holy Angels hasn't missed a beat as they beat the South St. Paul Packers last week 28-6.  Stars quarterback Rook Rowe threw two touchdown passes and caught a pass from Tristin Wiggins to lead Holy Angels.  One member of last year's team also excelled against South St. Paul, running back Thomas Shelstad.  Shelstad ran for 75 yards and reached the end zone.  Mitch Hendrickson added a touchdown and was also a solid defense player along with his brother Jack.  The Hendricksons and Shelstad are the keys to Holy Angels on both sides of the football, especially defense where they have give up a combined 13 points in their two wins.

It should be a really warm Friday night in Richfield.  Bring a water bottle.  Game time is 7 PM.

Jefferson Girls Basketball Coach Lambrecht Passes Away

There will be a new head coach for the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars girls basketball team in the 2018-19 season.

On September 8, Paul Lambrecht, who was going to begin his second season coaching the Jaguars this winter, passed away from cancer at the age of 53.

Lambrecht became the Jaguars fourth head coach in the program's history, replacing Andy Meinhardt in 2017.

Prior to coaching the Jaguars, he was the head coach of a school that had the same nickname, the Jordan Jaguars.  He graduated from the Scott County school in 1984 and became the head girls basketball coach seven years later.  He led Jordan to the state tournament three times and didn't win a state title as they finished second, third and fourth.  Among the players Lambrecht coached at Jordan was Brittany Chambers, who is the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,826.  She later went on to Kansas State where she was a second team All American and was drafted in the second round by the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks.  Another notable name was Leah Dietel, who ranks third on the career scoring leader board with 2,478 points. Dietel went on to play for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.  Both Chambers and Dietel also excelled in volleyball.

In addition to coaching, Lambrecht also was involved with baseball.  He had a long career in townball playing for the St. Benedict Saints that played in the state tournament in 2013 and 2016.

Our condolences go out to everyone at Bloomington Jefferson and the Lambrecht family on Paul's passing.  No word on who will guide the Jefferson girls basketball team in the upcoming season.

September 9 Marks 50th Anniversary of Syndicated What's My Line's Debut

A little over a year after the prime time version of What's My Line was canceled by CBS after a 17 year run, the classic panel game show returned in syndication, debuting on September 9, 1968.  Sunday is the 50th anniversary of the show's return to TV, spawning a number of revivals of other game shows from the team of Mark Goodson and Bill Todman.

It was the summer of 1968.  The Goodson-Todman game show empire was crumbling after CBS axed What's My Line, I've Got a Secret, the prime time version of To Tell the Truth and Password.  The daytime To Tell the Truth would also be canceled, leaving only two game shows from the prolific pair that aired on NBC's daytime lineup, Snap Judgement, hosted by Ed McMahon and the original Match Game with Gene Rayburn as host.

So Gil Fates and Bob Bach, long time G-T staffers, pitched an idea to Goodson of airing What's My Line in daily syndication.  Though Goodson was initially pessimistic about the idea, the company went forward with the revival.  One regular panelist who would return was Arlene Francis.

One thing that would be a new dimension to What's My Line would be demonstrations by the contestants after the actual game was played.  It was an element of G-T's other long running panel show I've Got a Secret.  But who would be the moderator?  Original host John Daly, who recently left the Voice of America was offered to return to his post but he turned it down.  In Adam Nedeff's book TV Game Shows FAQ, Daly responded to Goodson "Save this show business stuff for I've Got a Secret. You better get yourself a new boy."

And so they did in Washington newsman Wally Bruner.  He also covered the Vietnam War for ABC.

The revived What's My Line debuted on September 9 and instituted a number changes to move the game along.  First, Bruner would give a clue before the occupation was revealed to the home audience.  For example:  "Deals with a product that is worn."  Second, the contestant would demonstrate his/her skill after the game.  The curtain would open and the fun began.  After a second spot, the third would be a Mystery Guest with the panel blindfolded.  They would have two to three minutes to establish the Mystery Guest's identity.

Also on the debut panel was former kids show host and comedian Soupy Sales.  Six weeks later, he would join Francis as the second regular panelist.  He would be so popular that a number of local station managers requested reruns of episodes with Sales on the panel

The What's My Line revival turned out to be a hit and also paved the way for revivals of To Tell the Truth and Beat the Clock, which debuted in syndication the following season.  Also debuting was the first run game show He Said, She Said, hosted by Joe Garagiola and revived four years later under the title Tattletales with Bert Convy hosting.  Convy was also one of many guest panelists over the show's seven year run.

Other guest panelists included Allen Ludden, Gene Shalit, Anita Gillette, Jack Cassidy and a Welsh actor named Gawn Grainger.

After four seasons, Bruner would leave the show to host a new how-to show titled Wally's Workshop.  He would be replaced by Larry Blyden.  Also departing would be announcer Johnny Olson, who would become the iconic voice on The Price is Right who originated the phrase "Come on Down!"  After a series of guest announcers that included long time NBC staff announcer Wayne Howell, Chet Gould would become the new permanent announcer in early 1973.

In 1974, the set got a makeover and the opening was changed.  The animated opening and the panelists introducing each other were jettisoned in favor of Gould's brief intro of one of the day's contestants followed by his introductions of the panel and Blyden.

However, the end of the show's seventh season would be the last for What's My Line.  There were few station orders for an eighth season and many felt that the show had run its course.  So that would be the end of the syndicated version of a show that began in 1950 and ran until 1967 before lasting seven seasons in syndication.

What's My Line's success would also spawn revivals of Password, after reruns of the CBS daytime version did well in syndication and a show that would become the number one daytime show following its debut in 1973, Match Game.  But their biggest and longest running revival hit would be The Price is Right, first hosted by Bob Barker and now under the hosting reigns of Drew Carey.

What's My Line opened up the daytime syndication market for game shows, which is still strong today with Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Cooper Hawks Fly Past SLP Orioles

If Elsie the Cow was a football fan, she would have been proud of Nascier Borden as he scored three touchdowns to lead the Cooper Hawks to a 42-21 win over the host St. Louis Park Orioles Friday night.

It was the first meeting between the two schools since November 3, 2007 when the Orioles earned their first trip to the state tournament with a victory over the Hawks on a cold and snowy night.

Following a Hawk punt that landed the ball at the Orioles one yard line, Cooper picked up a safety after St. Louis Park quarterback Aaron Ellingson was tackled in the end zone.  The Hawks would strike again on a 12 yard keeper touchdown from quarterback Trashawn McMillan to put them ahead 9-0.

Cooper would reach the end zone twice in the second quarter.  After McMillan completed a 15 yard pass to Corneilius Wooten, Borden would score on a one yard run and they would go up by 15.  Borden would wrap up the first half scoring with a 14 yard run with :05.6 left and Cooper led 22-0 at halftime.

The Hawks would score the third quarter's only touchdown as McMillan made an outstanding 81 yard touchdown pass to Dkyzian Clay that put Cooper ahead by 28.  St. Louis Park almost ended the shut out late in the third quarter but time ran out with the ball one the Hawks one yard line.

But there would be good news for Oriole fans as the fourth quarter began with junior running back Sajid Nathim scoring on a one yard touchdown run and there would be no shut out for the Hawks, tied for sixth with St. Thomas Academy in Class AAAAA.  Cooper answered :31 later as Borden followed a 32 yard gain with an eight yard touchdown run.  St. Louis Park would capitalize on a pair of fourth down conversions that resulted in Nathim's second one yard touchdown run.  The Orioles would regain possession on an onside kick recovered at the Hawks 30 yard line by Aaron Sledge but they could return the ball to the end zone.  Cooper would conclude the scoring on McMillan's second touchdown pass of the game.  He would throw 35 yard pass to Pedro Amoussou and he would score his third touchdown of the season.

The Hawks improved their record to 2-0 and will host the Spring Lake Panthers on Friday, September 14 at 7 PM.  The Orioles fell to 1-1 and will also be in action on the 14 th as the head to Richfield to face the top ranked team in Class AAAA and defending state champion Holy Angels Stars.  Game time is also 7 PM.

SLP Oriole Boys Get the Shut Out, Girls in Scoreless Deadlock Against Chaska Hawks

The weather picture was a lot better than Tuesday for the St. Louis Park Orioles soccer teams Metro West Conference opener where the boys shut out the Chaska Hawks 5-0 and the girls battled to a 0-0 tie.

First up was the boys game which started 30 minutes late due to Chaska having bus trouble.  It would turn out to be a breakout game for David Benjamin, who scored two goals to lead St. Louis Park to a 5-0 win over Chaska.

The Orioles tallied three times in the first half.  Thomas Salamzadeh almost got the first goal but it was disallowed because of an offside call.  St. Louis Park would get on the scoreboard when Zinedine Kroeten centered the ball to Benjamin in the top of the box and he would score his first goal.  Salamzadeh would get credit for the Orioles second goal on a line shot that went off of Hawks goalkeeper Eddie Munoz and entered the net.  They would go up by three on Randy Mayele's goal from the left corner.

St. Louis Park added two more goals to their ledger in the second half.  Benjamin would score his second goal on a pass from Ben Klepfer.  The Orioles concluded the scoring on Sam Gage's right side goal with 1:30 left to play.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, September 8.  St. Louis Park improved their record to 3-0-1 and will travel to Plymouth to face the Armstrong Falcons at 2 PM.  Chaska fell to 1-3-2 and heads to Waconia for an 11 AM game against the Wildcats.

Now to the girls game where the Chaska Hawks had a goal nullified due to offside and that would be the only ball in the net for 90 minutes of playing time as the game would end in a 0-0 tie.

The story of the game would be the numerous substitutions the Hawks and Orioles made throughout the game.  If you were to get an exact number, it would be like the Coneheads of Saturday Night Live fame would answer "mass quantities."  Chaska would put new players in on almost every throw in.

Chaska's record is now 1-3-2 and two and they will head to Waconia on Saturday, September 8 to face the Wildcats at 1 PM.  St. Louis Park has a record of 1-3-1 and will also be in action on the 8th, heading to Minneapolis to take on the Southwest Lakers at 7 PM.

Rematch of Last Year's Section Final to Open SLP Orioles Home Season

Friday's home opener for the St. Louis Park Orioles football team has a familiar ring to it since they will be hosting the opponent they beat last November to enter their first state football tournament the Cooper Hawks.  Here's a preview of Friday's game.

Both the Orioles and Hawks were victorious last week.  St. Louis Park opened their season last Thursday against the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles.  Sajid Nathim ran for two touchdowns to help lead the Orioles to a 34-7 win.  Nathim had 17 carries for 67 yards.  Aaron Ellingson, making his first regular season start at quarterback after Johnny Sorenson received his diploma last June threw two touchdown passes.  The first was to Akili Farris and the second was to McCabe Dvorak.  Ellingson completed 14 of 28 passes for 121 yards.  Farris and Dvorak were two of four St. Louis Park players to catch three passes.  The other two were Cole Ewald, son of St. Louis Park activities director Andy Ewald and Sam Thyme.  The key to beating Cooper is for Ellingson to spread the ball around on offense and the offensive line has to create opportunities for Nathim to get big gains against a tough Hawks defense.  On defense, they will need to slow down the Hawks running game.

As for Cooper, they traveled to Brooklyn Park last Friday to take on the Park Center Pirates.  Nascier Borden ran for two touchdowns and 141 rushing yards to sink the Pirates 54-14.  Pedro Amoussou was a duel threat for the Hawks, scoring two touchdowns.  The first came on a 71 yard punt return in the first quarter and caught a 30 yard touchdown pass from Trashawn McMillan with 1:03 left in the first half.  The Hawks are a running team and the key to the game for Cooper will be trying to solve the St. Louis Park defense as they utilized team speed and strong defense.

It should be a beautiful Friday night in St. Louis Park so get outside and head to the stadium as St. Louis Park tries to win their second consecutive game against Cooper.  Game time is 7 PM.

SLP Orioles Win First Game of Season

To quote a song from the cartoon short Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day, "The rain rain rain came down down down" Tuesday night  but it didn't stop the St. Louis Park girls soccer team from scoring three second half goals as the host Orioles shut out the Minneapolis South Tigers 3-0.

As fans with numerous umbrella designs viewed the contest on this rainy Tuesday night, there was no scoring in the first half.  Following a shortened halftime break, the Orioles opened the second half scoring on a goal from Aliviah McClinton that went past the right side of Tiger goalkeeper Chloe Olson.  St. Louis Park would go up by two when Ellie Kent was awarded a free kick.  She would go up against a four player wall from Mpls. South and shoe lined the ball toward the net, deflecting off of Olson's right hand and entering the net.  The Orioles would conclude the scoring as Ava Bishop fed Kate Kasica in the center slot and she sent it past Olson for her first varsity goal.

St. Louis Park ended a three game losing streak and improved their record to 1-3.  They will return to action Thursday, September 6 as they host the Chaska Hawks at 7 PM.  Mpls. South fell to 1-2 and will also be in action on the 6th, heading to northeast Minneapolis to take on the Edison Tommies at 5 PM.
