2019 Class AA Girls Basketball Section Preview

Two classes examined and two more to go.  In Class AA, a couple of sections are underway and the rest are about to begin as the eight sections are about to be previewed.

Section 1 is already underway and there's good news for fans living near Lake Pepin since the Lake City Tigers are the top seed and have a great shot at their first trip to state in 35 years.  But before Tiger fans make their hotel reservations for Minneapolis, the second seeded Caledonia Warriors are red hot and on a 17 game winning streak.  It's been 10 years since the Warriors won the state Class AA title and they could head to The Barn if they stay that way.  Look out for the third seeded Rochester Lourdes Eagles, the fourth seeded Winona Cotter Ramblers and the fifth seeded Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars.  Exciting girls basketball action at the Mayo Civic Center.

Over to Section 2 where the top seed in the North Subsection is the Norwood-Young America Raiders who are on a quest for their fourth trip to state in five years.  They will have to get past the second seeded Jordan Jaguars and third seeded Tri City United.  The South Subsection's top seed is the unbeaten Medford Tigers.  The Tigers are four wins away from their first trip to Minneapolis.  But they will have to get past the second seeded Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers and the third seeded Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights.

Section 3 has already stated and the two top seeds are still alive, the Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles and the Pipestone Arrows.  It's been 35 years since an athlete named Janice Streit led the Eagles to state and they look to get the perennial power New London-Spicer Wildcats.  As for the Arrows, they have to contend with the second seeded Redwood Valley Cardinals and the third seeded Jackson County Central Huskies.

In Section 4, the top seeded Minnehaha Academy Redhawks have another outstanding team that could make their seventh trip to state in eight years.  Hoping to end the Redhawks run is the second seeded Concordia Academy Beacons and the third seeded Minneapolis Edison Tommies.  The Tommies have a shot at being the fourth school from the Minneapolis City Conference to clinch a state berth. Can they pull the upsets?

It could be a three team race in Section 5 with the top seeded Holy Family Catholic Fire ending the regular season with eight wins in their last nine games.  On their path is the second seeded Annandale Cardinals and the third seeded Maranatha Chirstian Academy Mustangs, a dominate program that has been to every state tournament this decade.  Can the streak continue or will Holy Family Catholic put out the Mustangs section fire?

To Section 6 where the defending Class AA champion Sauk Centre Mainstreeters are on a quest for their eighth trip down I-94 in nine years.  Head coach Scott Bergman has tough competition coming his way in the Rush City Tigers who are looking for their first state tournament berth.  The pairing have not been released but it's likely the the top two seeds will be Sauk Centre and Rush City.

Up north in Section 7, the top seeded Proctor Rails hope to make their firt trip to Minneapolis since 2001.  They will have to contend with the second seeded Crosby-Ironton Rangers and the third seeded Pequot Lakes Patriots in their subsection.  In the second subsection, the top seeded Esko Eskomos are in the hunt for their 13th trip down I-35 to Minneapolis.  Also in the hunt is the second seeded Mesabi East Giants and the third seeded Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers.

Wrapping up the Class AA preview is Section 8 where the top seeded Roseau Rams look to return to state for the fifth straight year.  Looking to dethrone them are the second seeded Breckenridge Cowboys and the third seeded Hawley Nuggets.  The Park Rapids Panthers are the top seed in the second subsection followed by the second seeded East Granf Forks Green Wave.

Next;  The eight Class A sections.
