SLP Oriole Soccer Teams Split With BSM Red Knights

The weather was getting chilly Tuesday night but there was plenty of hot soccer action as the St. Louis Park Oriole soccer teams hosted the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights with the boys routing the Red Knights 6-1 and the BSM girls shutting out the Orioles on a late goal 1-0.

First up was the boys game where Randy Mayele and Nick Riley scored two goals apiece to bolster a five goal second half that led the St. Louis Park Orioles to a 6-1 win over the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights.

Both teams would tally in the first half.  The Orioles would strike first when Zinedine Kroeten was fouled on a hand ball and awarded a penalty kick.  He put the ball into the net.  It would be a tie game on Harrison Shibley's shot that rolled down the right side of the net and entered the goal.  Shibley was the only Red Knight senior in uniform due to injuries to Will Driessen and Thomas Forby.  His goal evened the score at one at halftime.

St. Louis Park, which has given up only two goals since August 29, would break the game open with five second half goals.  The first three came in a span of :58.  Mayele rebounded Isaak Kimmel's shot for the first goal.  Riley would score from the right side :21 later and Ben Klepfer, who was moved to goalkeeper in the first half due to a nosebleed suffered by regular goalkeeper Leo Finley, returned to the Oriole offensive attack, passed to Mayele and he scored his second goal.  Though BSM played strong defense on St. Louis Park, they were victimized by an own goal that would be awarded to Riley and Klepfer would wrap up the scoring with a goal from the center slot.

The Orioles improved their record to 9-0-1 and travel to Richfield on Thursday, September 27 for a 7 PM game with the Spartans.  The Red Knights fell to 4-7-1 and will also be in action on the 27th as they host the Cooper Hawks at 7 PM.

On to the girls game and there would only be one goal.  It would come from Stella Fortier with 6:34 left in regulation time to lead the BSM Red Knights to a 1-0 win over the St. Louis Park Orioles.

Neither team would send the ball to the net in the first half and it looked like it would be a scoreless tie heading into the two five minute overtime periods.  No so on this chilly Tuesday night as Stella Fortier's shot would head for the net with 6:34 left to play.  As the orange lit seconds ticked down on the scoreboard, the Orioles had a chance to send the game into overtime but Dare Kroeten's shot bounced off the crossbar and that's how the game ended.

BSM Improved their record to 7-4-1 and hosts the Cooper Hawks on the 27th at 5 PM.  St. Louis Park ended a six game unbeaten streak and fell to 4-4-2.  They will also be in action on the 27th, heading to Richfield to rake on the Spartans at 5 PM.
