Don't Forget Girls Tennis

In the last post that focused on the first day of fall sports practice around Minnesota and the opening dates for each sport, one sport that was unintentionally overlooked was girls tennis.

To anyone connected with girls tennis, HSGN would like to apologize for overlooking your sport.  It was a bit of an oversight and in fairness to the other fall sports mentioned in the previous post, here are the opening matches for St. Louis Park and Benilde-St.Margaret's.

St. Louis Park opens their regular season next Tuesday, August 23 as they host the Breck Mustangs in a 4 PM meet.  In 2014, the Muatangs took third place in the Class A team portion of the state tournament.  As for the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights, their season opener is Thursday, August 25 when they host the defending state Class A team champion Blake Bears at 4 PM at Aquila Park.
But an even bigger story could take place on October 26 when the state Class AA championship is held at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.  If the Edina Hornets win the state title, it will be a state record  20th consecutive state championship and 34th overall.  The Hornets, according to the National Federation of High School Associations record book is nine wins away from the national record of 42 that's set by Honolulu Punahow.  First comes the regular season and the Hornets open up by heading up I-94 to participate in the St. Cloud Tech tournament on Tuesday, August 23.

Could it be the start for 20 straight state titles for head coach Steve Paulson and the Edina Hornets?
