The Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers made the most of their two and a half hour trip down I-35 and led for most of the game but it was Kate Glover who scored the game winning goal with 1:13 left in regulation time to lead the Hopkins/Park Royals to a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon at The Rec Center.
In the first period, the Hilltoppers, without any juniors or seniors on their roster, took the early lead as Olivia Boettcher passed to Emily Lemker in the left slot and Duluth Marshall led 1-0 though they were out shot by the Royals 16-3.
The one on Duluth Marshall's side of the new West Rink scoreboard would remain stationary in the second period. Hopkins/Park had a golden opportunity to tie the game at one with a five on three situation for 1:40 but they couldn't put the puck past the Hilltoppers freshman goalie Carissa Mudrak.
Late in the third period, the Royals offense would come to life and put the game away with three consecutive goals. The first would give Mudrak a case of "Typhoid Mary" as Mary Gleason passed to Mary O'Neil and she went around the left side of the net and put the puck in to tie the game. Glover, who will play next season at Harvard, would score the eventual game winner with 1:13 to go as she rebounded her own shot and scored. Duluth Marshall head coach Sean Storie pulled Mudrak for a sixth attacker and the Royals cashed in with an empty net goal from Annika Patterson with :32 to play.
Hopkins/Park ended their four game losing streak and improved their record to 14-7. They will return to the Minnetonka Ice Arena on Tuesday, January 24 to face the Minnetonka Skippers at 7 PM. Duluth Marshall lost their ninth straight game and fell to 3-14-3 and will play the Hibbing/Chisholm Bluejackets on Monday, January 23 at 7 PM at the Hibbing Memorial Arena.
