Wednesday night was a big night for The Lindsey Family as Sadie scored two goals and Ava picked up two assists to lead the Breck Mustangs to a 6-2 win over the Orono Spartans in the Section 5A championship game at The Rec Center in St. Louis Park.
The game was a rematch of a December 21 game where the Mustangs routed the Spartans 11-2.
There was no scoring in the first period as Breck outshot Orono 11-0 until the Spartans took their first shot at Mustang goalie Sarah Peterson with 6:39 left in the first period.
Orono would strike first in the second period when Alexa Niccum found an opening on the right side of Peterson and put it past her for the early lead. Before Spartans fans took out their smartphones to make hotel reservations for next week's state tournament in St. Paul, Sadie Lindsey got a pass from Hannah Halverson and sent it past the right side of Orono goalie Anna Lisle to tie the game. Ally Qualley would put Breck ahead :10 later. The Spartans would tie the game at two as Kailey Niccum drove through the center slot like the team bus heading down Highway 100 and sent it to the net.
The Mustangs would regain the lead :50 later on Olivia Mobley's right side goal. Breck would extend their lead to two as Hannah Halverson scored on a rebound. Senior co-captain Ashley Halverson would set up Breck's final goal of the period with a centering pass to Sadie Lindsey and the Mustangs lead increased to three.
It looked like there would be no scoring in the third period. Wrong. Following a :27 5 on 3 situation, Josie Lang, one of three Breck eighth graders, scored a power play goal with :18.3 to play and clinch a chance for the Mustangs to win their third straight state Class A title.
Breck improved their record to 22-6 and will begin their road to a Class A threepeat in the state tournament quarterfinals Wednesday, February 19 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Orono ended their season with a record of 17-10-1.
