The top seeded Breck Mustangs are one win away from their third straight trip to the state girls hockey tournament as they battle the Orono Spartans in the Section 5A title game at The Rec Center in St. Louis Park.
The Mustangs have dominated section play, outscoring the opposition 20-1. They shut out St. Francis/North Branch 11-0 in the quarterfinals and in a rematch of last year's championship game, Breck beat Minneapolis 9-1 in the semifinals.
In the quarterfinals, Ava Lindsey and Olivia Mobley recorded hat tricks. Factor in Ally Qualley's six assists and the Mustangs totally dominated the Fighting Saints outshooting the north suburban co-op 40-6. Mobley added two goals to her ledger in the semifinals against Minneapolis and the Lindsey Sisters, Ava and Sadie scored two goals apiece. Hannah Halverson picked up four assists for Breck. Goaltending is in good hands for the two time state champions as freshman Sarah Peterson has given up only one goal in two section games. Can she keep the Spartans portion of the scoreboard at zero?
And speaking of the Spartans, third seeded Orono is looking for their first trip to St. Paul. They shut out the Holy Angels Stars in the quarterfinals 4-0 and beat the second seeded Chisago Lakes Wildcats in the semifinals 5-1.
Celia Whittington scored two goals in the quarterfinals against Holy Angels and goalie Anna Lisle recorded the shutout. In the semifinals, Kailey Niccum scored two goals and Orono took advantage of an empty net with two goals in a span of :27 to beat the second seeded Wildcats. Can they pull the upset or will it be a Breck threepeat?
Game time is 7 PM.
