Get ready for Homecoming football 2019 as the Battle of the SLPs comes to St. Louis Park as the Orioles face the Spring Lake Park Panthers Friday, September 20.
Both the Panthers and the Orioles head into the midpoint of the regular season with identical 1-2 records. They're also coming off defeats last Friday with the Orioles getting clobbered by the cooper Hawks 49-25 and the Panthers falling to the Coon Rapids Cardinals 23-14.
There was a bright spot for St. Louis Park last week in New Hope when running back Sajid Nathim had 26 carries for 171 yards and reached the end zone three times. The Orioles trailed 21-13 at halftime but cooper would put the game away in the second half as quarterback Joseph Russell threw for 228 yards and three touchdown passes and ran for 98 yards.
On the defensive side for St. Louis Park, Tony Sadler sacked Joseph Russel and had 10 total tavkles. He will need to be a factor along with the remainder of the Oriole defense.
As for the Panthers, in their second season under head coach John Stewart, they still employ a high powered running game. Quarterback Zach Dunbar completed seven of 12 passes for 84 yards, including a touchdown pass to Kaleb Skelly. Dunbar also ran 24 times for 85 yards. The Panther defense was anchored by Blaine Cooper who had 12 total tackles and Joey Sorenson added 11.
The key to the Orioles having a happy Homecoming is for Nathim to continue where he left off last week against Cooper and the defense has to slow down the Panther rushing attack.
The key to the Panthers beating the Orioles is for the offensive line to create opportunities for Dunbar and for the defense to slow down St. Louis Park quarterback Aaron Ellingson.
If you're going to the game, get there early. A large Homecoming crowd is anticipated. You also might want to bring an umbrella. Game time is 7 PM.
