SLP Orioles-Orono Spartans Football Preview

The second half of the Minnesota high school football season begins this week as the St. Louis Park Orioles head to Pesonen stadium in Long Lake to face the Orono Spartans.

Both the Orioles and Spartans enter the game with identical 1-3 records.  St. Louis Park had a Homecoming train wreck as the Spring Lake Park Panthers routed the Orioles 49-14.  Orono got their first win of the season with a 14-7 win over the Waconia Wildcats.

In checking the box score and statistics from last week's game on mnfootballhub.com, there were no stats mentioned for the Orioles.  But the rush defense sprung a leak as the Panthers ran for a total of 438 yards to only 36 passing yards.  Henry Dennis ran 10 times for 189 yards and quarterback Zach Dunbar had 15 carries for 132 yards.  Both Dennis and Dubar had two touchdowns apiece.  The good news from the game was Sajid Nathim scored a touchdown on a 95 yard kickoff return.

The Spartans scored all their 14 points in the first half to hold off the Wildcats.  Danny Striggow, who has committed to Minnesota next season scored on a 36 yard touchdown run to help snap a three game losing streak where they scored only seven points in the first three games.  They have played a tough schedule that started with Benilde-St. Margaret's, continued with Cooper and face a state tournament team from last year in Chaska.

What St. Louis Park needs to do to beat Orono is to tighten the run defense and quarterback aaron Ellingson has to take care of the ball and not cause a lot of turnovers.

Orono's keys to the game include finding a way get the offense going and create more scoring opportunities.

The weather picture on Friday calls for temperatures in the 60s.  Bring a jacket if you plan to attend the game that starts at 7 PM.
