Armstrong Falcons-SLP Orioles Football Preview

St. Louis Park Orioles football fans will have an opportunity to see the newly renovated stadium Friday night as the Orioles open their home season against the Armstrong Falcons.

Last Friday, the Orioles got off to a solid start in their season opener against the Richfield Spartans.  Quarterback Logan Romero threw three touchdown passes in the first half, two to Mykel Howard and they led at the half 18-13.  But after a scoreless third quarter, St. Louis Park couldn't hold on to their lead as Richfield scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter including a 62 yard touchdown run by Cole Christian that led the Spartans to a 26-13 come from behind win.

As for Armstrong, the Falcons were also on the short end in their maiden voyage in the 2016 season as they headed down Highway 212 to take on the Chanhassen Storm and lost 49-28.  The Storm led 42-7 at the half.  Tom Loeffler rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns that included a 74 yard run.  Armstrong had two touchdowns apiece from Jesse Sherwood and Cartier Reid.

The key to the game for the Orioles is for Romero to get into a groove on offense and spread the ball around as he did last week.  They also have to play tighter defense, especially in the second half since that's what cost them the game against Richfield.

Armstrong's key is to get another strong running game from Reid and also get good offensive line blocking so that he can have another big offensive game.  They also have to play strong defense and not give up so many points in the early going that would put them in a hole the couldn't climb out of.
The weather should be nice for the Orioles home opener so if you haven't seen the renovated stadium yet, get outside and do so.  Can St. Louis Park ambush Armstrong?
