Two days after the Orono Spartans beat the St. Louis Park Orioles in overtime, the Spartans completed the sweep as Cayden Effertz scored two goals to lead them to a 3-0 shutout at The Rec Center.
Orono scored the lone first period goal on Easton Sankey's shot from the left corner boards. Neither team would tally in the second period thanks to outstanding goaltending from the Spartans Brock Peyton and the Orioles Josh Middleton.
Heading into the third period, it would be an outstanding effort from Effertz and he would put the game away with two goals. His first goal came on a rebound of Brooks Fegers's shot and the second after St. Louis Park pulled Middleton with 1:06 to go and utilize a sixth attacker. But it was Effertz who found the empty net with :16.8 to play.
Orono improved their record to 18-3 and returns to action Tuesday, February 7 against the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights at 7 PM at the Morrison Ice Arena in Long Lake. St. Louis Park fell to 9-10-1 and will begin a three game road trip on Saturday, February 4 at 3 PM against the Holy Family Catholic Fire at the Victoria Ice Arena.
