Saturday afternoon was festive for the Breck girls hockey team beginning with a pregame ceremony that raised the Class A championship banner to the right of the scoreboard at Anderson Arena in Golden Valley. The festivities continued with hat tricks from Olivia Mobley and Shae Messner that led the Mustangs to a 10-1 rout of the Centennial Cougars.
The Mustangs got on the board 1:45 into the first period as Ashley Halvorson passed to Mobley and the senior dribbled the puck a few times, cit to the center slot and went top shelf. The Cougars had a five on three for 1:19 but they were unable to even the score. But Breck would go up by two as Ava Lindsay fed Messner at the right of Centennial goalie Kaitlin Gruess and she sent it to the net.
The second period was a big one for Breck as they found the net eight times. Ava Lindsay skated through the center slot and scored a short handed goal :26 into the period. Mobley would score her second goal on a shot just barely inside the right face off circle. The Lindsay Sisters, Ava and Sadie would score assists on Messner's second goal, scoring on a rebound. Eighth grader Josie Lang helped set up the Mustangs sixth goal as she fed Emily Zumwinkle on the right side and she lined it into the goal. Mobley would get the hat trick on a short handed goal and Ava Lindsay would follow :54 later. Messner would also score a hat trick, scoring off a pass from Sophie Fagley. Breck would go up by ten when Zumwinkle fed Sadie Lindsay and she would go top shelf with :02 left in the period.
There would good news for the red and black clad Centennial fans who came down I-35W from Circle Pines in the third period. Ella O'Hearn found Megan Goodreau on the left side and Goodreau would end any hopes of a Breck shutout.
The Mustangs begin the season 1-0 and return to action on Tuesday, November 12 as they host the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights at 7 PM at Anderson Arena. The Cougars fell to 0-1 and will also be in action on the 12th hosting Osseo/Park Center at 7:30 at the Super Rink in Blaine. Centennial will play their first four home games at the eight ice sheet facility due to renovations at the Centennial Sports Arena.
