On a chilly Monday night in St. Louis Park, Jacob Donnett heated up and scored a game high 47 points to lead the Kaleidoscope/Holy Spirit Comets to a 103-65 drubbing of the Groves Academy Griffins in the opening round of the 2019 Section 4A Boys Basketball Tournament.
There was good news for the Griffins early when Nick Maiers began the first half scoring on a three pointer :10 into the game. AJ Kargel would score first for the Comets and Goldstein would put Groves Academy ahead. Jacob Donnet would score five of the Comets first seven points and also hit a three pointer to help energize a 6-0 run. Goldstein would end the run for the Griffins and Noah Yager would hit to tie the game at 14. The Comets would forge ahead on a 12-0 run and they would stay in the lead the remainder of the game as Goldstein would end another run. Donnett would hit six shots from Minnetonka Blvd. and he would score 35 first half points to lead the Comets at halftime 62-35.
A brief glimmer of hope for the Griffins came in the second half as they went on a 4-0 run. That would be the only bright spot for Groves Academy in the second half as Kargel would score seven consecutive points as Donnett would go cold, missing several shots. he would hit his first second half basket with 11:24 to play. The Kargel and Donnett tandem would send the game into running time halfway through the second half. With the margin already decided, Griffins head coach Peter Shutte gave reserves an Ethan Ellertson and Jake Anderson some playing time as the season was winding down.
Kargel would finish the game with 41 points for the Comets. Goldstein would lead Groves Academy with 19 points. Larry Mohamed would add 18.
The Comets improved their record to 8-14 and will head to Maple Grove on Tuesday, March 5 to face the Heritage Christian Academy Eagles at 5:30 in the Section 4A Round of 16. The Griffins ended their season with a 5-18 record.
